Mutation Theories?

Based on the animals that we see in the game I suspect there may be coywolves in the future and potentially wolfdogs (should be called wogs but I digress.) The one argument against wolfdogs is that there are dozens of breeds of dogs so either the coding would be difficult and nearly impossible or it would only incorporate one breed of dog and a wolf. |

I very much agree with most of the suggestions so far in the thread. I hope they will be more nuanced than cosmetic or lethal; involving stat changes, breeding percentages and maybe even influencing breeding (higher energy costs, fewer heat days?) |

What about like bone deficiencies for mutations? I know it's weird, but there's my thought. |

I don't think having wolfdog hybrids needs to be complicated. We don't need wolf x every breed that exists. Just pick a sled dog, make it smaller in than the regular wolf image, slap on a curled tail, and maybe a soft ear. Then give it a hybrid only marking and you're good to go. *edited to fix typos |

@Styxx there are actually bone malformations in wild wolves such as those seen on Isla Royale, an island home to an isolated and heavily inbred population of wolves. Pups have been found with extra ribs, twisted spines, and various other defects. Coywolves are very real and very possibly a future hybrid in this game I would think. Dingo and grey wolf Hybrids (wingos? Dolves?) Would in fact just be grey wolves with a tad bit more red in their fur. Dingos are now known to be a subspecies of grey wolf. Double merle is mentioned so often in this thread, but has anyone even considered the K locus? This is the gene that causes melanism in wolves and is actually from them breeding with dogs. This gene causes a black coat (melanism) and a slightly higher level of resistance to various diseases, but a wolf with two copies of the gene (KK) normally dies in the womb Another defect that nobody has considered is canine hermaphroditism and psuedohermaphroditism, where they have or appear to have reproductive organs of both genders. Forget double uteruses, how about a wolf that can get others pregnant and become pregnant itself? |

@Sardothia I figured there were bone deficiencies in wild wolves. Just thought I should suggest it as a mutation for here. But thanks for the info too! |

I like all those options, though I highly doubt hermaphrodites would ever be introduced into WD due to the nature of the mutation not really working like that and the fact that the creators turned it down time and time again on LD. More than likely, if it was a thing the wolf would be infertile or only be able to do one or the other. |

Very happy to be proven wrong but as far as I know no mammal hermaphrodites are bi-fertile (i.e. able to both get pregnant and get others pregnant) - it isn't really realistic. Instead, mammals with intersex conditions are generally either completely infertile, or fertile as only males or females. If there were art differences between males and females then I could see there being a mutation where a wolf appears as one sex but is actually the other, or there could be a third art category for "intersex" along with male and female, but since the sexes share art on WD I'm not sure what the mutation would do except make the wolf infertile and put "intersex" on the wolf's page where "male"/"female" would normally be. |

I'd love to see a bunch of smaller mutations that are mostly for aesthetics, like roman noses, and the tails and ears already mentioned. I think curly fur could be an interesting one, too! |

I kind of skimmed here and there, but with all the mutations found in dogs being suggested and the possibility of physical mutations like floppy ears, different tails~ It would be really cool to see dogs created through mutations and then wolfdogs created that way. I would imagine it would take a long time for that to happen, though. |
