Chapter One: Finding Our Way Home

Masknose and I walked side by side, waiting for the right territory to come along. We twisted and turned, wandered and circled, but we couldn't find the right place. Our pups, Beigepup and Blackpup, skittered behind Masknose a ways, getting tired of walking for so long. I looked at them sorrowfully. I wanted to rest, but with a real pack and camp. We had four others following us: Goldenpelt, Greyfur, Lightfur, and Browndapple, who all usually hunted with Masknose.

I was excited to find a real home and have the pack stay there, all of us having a way of living, where we stayed together, yet found new places to see. I wanted a mountain home, but I knew Browndapple would prefer a forest home, some type of shelter over his head. I liked the open space to feel the wind in my fur. When it rained in the mountains, the rain covered your fur. But in the trees, it dripped onto you, which was very annoying in my opinion.

"Moonstar, where exactly are we going?" he asked me. 

I turned to Masknose. "Watch over the Pack?" I asked.

She nodded after glancing at our pups. 

I bounded over rocks and branches as we ran through the small woods. I jumped on the big boulder from where I'd seen the mountains. I flicked my tail to motion Browndapple up beside me. He was out of breath and panting, but jumped up beside me anyway. I swept my plume of a tail over the view of the mountains. "Right there," I said. "That's where we're going."

"There?" he asked. "Why?"

I sat down and put my tail over my paws. "Well, Browndapple, me and Masknose have always wanted to live in the mountains. Now, I know you won't agree, because you want to live in the forest," I paused as he rested his icey-blue eyes on me, "but I am Alpha, and Masknose is Beta."
