The Flux Pack The flux pack is one of change, a shifting band of wolves that have made their own definitions, of family, of themselves, of what it means to be to live. Everyone is unique, uniquely suited to their position. They follow the calls of love, of loyalty, of justice. The lore of this pack is one of interweaving paths, adventure, and destiny. These wolves follow the beat of their own heart, and the heart of their pack, their home, their family. Most everyone comes from somewhere else. The structure of the pack is ever-changing, but there are a few constants. Wolves are respected for their actions, for their histories, for their lives. The all-black wolves are respected for their connection to the night sky, and their mothers are respected for bringing such special wolves into this world. The sky-mothers raise their star children to respect the natural order of the world, the inevitability of change, so that they may someday go on their own journeys to spread the wisdom of the stars, finding their own packs and their own families. It is always a sad day when one’s children finally leave the nest, but the mothers console themselves with the knowledge of all the good their children will bring into the world. The young children of the sky are known as star-children, because stars are the children of the night sky, and they are named accordingly. The pack leader, Jess, although not one of the sky, has a special connection to change. She is the one who names the pups, choosing the right name for who they are. Their name is their definition, but not a limitation. The actions the new star-children make changes the meaning of their name, shifting and growing as they do. Nobody ever gets the same name, so that everybody may start without expectations, and create their own definition of themselves. |

Individual Stories These are the stories of the individual pack members. Where they are from, who they are, how they came to join the pack. It is a tapestry of stories, a collection of lives. These wolves matter, in your heart, in the hearts of others. They live, they laugh, they cry, they ache, they rejoice, they adventure to the fullest, to carve out their path in this world.

Leaders Jess, The First Of The Pack Jess was the first wolf. She was the mother. The pack began with her, and then later, Kierce, who is sadly now moved on to a different path. Abandoned at a young age by her mother’s pack, she carved her own way into the world, found her own path, her own way. By the age of one year, she had learned to take care of herself without the need for the help of her old pack. She made herself a home in a forest cave, enjoying her freedom, the lack of restrictions on her actions, the ability to be the one to hold herself accountable. She respected nature, and there was plenty for her to eat. Then Kierce came, handsome and strong, to sweep Jess off her feet. Their love was deep, and after a time, two pups were born. A boy and a girl. She named her first offspring, Nya, and Zayne. Her own pack was born, from the love of two wolves. She discovered what family was, and it intrigued her. She had never had a family before, not a real one. Her old pack was only forged out of necessity, and convenience, which was why she, the free-spirited wanderer, was cast out. Something new had grown inside of her, out of the love for her family. It was a strong feeling, guiding her to make the right choices. She didn’t see herself as special for this feeling, this sixth sense, but others did. She began to come across other wolves, in her territory, those lacking homes. Instead of chasing them out, defending her land like any other wolf, she let them in, welcoming them. They could join or leave as they wanted, and many wolves did join. Flint, the herbalist, was one of the first to join, and one of the few to never move on, and Jess liked him for that. After a few years, an unusual wolf came to Jess’ den, just a pup. Her coat was like the endless black of the night sky, her skin and nails the same bottomless black. She asked for sanctuary in the pack, which had not yet been given a name, and Jess granted it, promising shelter and food. She took pity on the young pup, remembering her own rough upbringing. This strange, black wolf would talk to Jess, while out on her scouting missions every day, and they soon became close friends, although she didn’t give Jess her name. Jess didn’t pry, and began to call the black wolf Lyra, after a constellation in the night sky. Lyra accepted the name, and began to use it for herself. It was fitting. Lyra had a litter of pups after she was grown- she had left one day and returned pregnant, telling Jess that she had visited her old pack, in order to fulfill a promise to keep her family name going. A name which she still kept secret. She seemed upset about it, but when the pups were born, she loved them just as much as any other mother would. This was the first litter of star-children Jess had named. One of them was blessed with the special dark fur, and the other two looked like any ordinary wolf. Lyra told Jess about her ancient lines, still avoiding names. Lyra had been the one to abandon her pack, because she didn’t feel like it was really her family. She followed the sky, and found Jess’ pack, which she called the Flux pack, despite it never having a name. Jess felt the name was a good one, so she took the name into her own use. Over time, more of the strange, black wolves made their way into her pack, as well as those who did not themselves have the black fur and skin, but inexplicably still managed to produce offspring with the traits. It happened more rarely than it did for the black wolves, but it still happened. Lyra taught Jess about the sky, and Jess, in turn, taught her about change. The strange black wolves were respected in the community and the children would leave when they felt the time was right for them, to find their own family. Although Jess knew she would not always be there to lead the Flux pack, just as Kierce eventually had to leave, she would never abandon it. She knew that even if she were to someday move on, the structure, the home, the family of it all, would continue. Nearing her seventh year, Jess had her second litter, knowing that her time for bearing young was growing short. She wanted to contribute for one last time. Anani was the firstborn, a male, with fur as soft as clouds. He bore the gift of the sky. Dani was the secondborn, born female, but not feeling any connection to gender. They also bore the gift of the sky. Jess chose them to be her successor, promising them the honor of being remade by the sky, with a special coat of blue. Dani was the strongest of the four. Elstan was the thirdborn, a male, with fur the color of spring leaves, and blue eyes that rivaled the beauty of the streams. He was born without the gift. Marscal was the fourthborn, a male, perhaps the most similar to his mother. His coat was devoid of most markings, aside from the blaze and head stripes of his father. His blue eyes were a perfect copy of his mother’s. Dani, Chosen Leader Born to the first lead, Jess, it was known from the very moment of their birth that Dani would be the successor. They were the strongest of the litter of four, with the blessing of the sky. This set them apart from the rest, receiving special treatment from their mother, special attention, special lessons. Dani made sure to pay attention to their mother’s words, knowing that the lessons were out of love as well as necessity. Dani was especially attached to their brother, Anani, who also held the blessing of the sky. It was known that Dani, and Dani alone would hold the title of leader, but Anani prepared alongside them, as moral support. The two promised to always stay together, no matter what, even when the time would come for the other pups to go and carve their path into the world. On the eve of their twelfth month, Dani was brought to a special clearing by their mother. The other pups were told to stay behind, but Anani snuck out to watch. The clearing bordered one of the largest rivers of the woodlands, and Dani was instructed to enter the waters. They obeyed, despite being frightened by the swift-moving current. Their mother’s gaze was approving, and proud, as they entered the water, a tingling sensation spreading over their whole coat. The heavens were reflected in the waters, as they sat in them, swirling, glowing with the whole host of stars. When they exited the waters, their fur was a whirlwind of new, startling colors. From the deep, blue-black of the night constellations, to the sky-blue of the day. Their mother smiled, taking the small pup beside herself, tail wagging with excitement. “I hadn’t dared to enter the waters myself,” Jess explained. “I knew that I did not have the true blessing of the sky, even though I have worked as its voice, as its change, for years. But you, you, my child, of my flesh and bone, you are worthy of it. It’s all reflected in your fur, now.” “You may see many of us leave, as the time goes on. There will always be sadness, but there will always be a beauty to it, wolves finding their own path, their own destiny, their own meaning.” Their mother’s eyes were distant, as she spoke her last sentence, before finally coming back to the present, to gaze once more upon her pup. “I don’t want to put all this pressure on you, please understand. If you ever feel like the life of a leader is not for you, you are free to leave, and forge your own path. No matter how important the role of the lead is, your happiness is even more important.” “Okay.” Their voice was still young, and high pitched, as they smiled their lopsided grin, meeting their mother’s gaze. “I understand.” And they did understand. They understood their mother’s story, their mother’s path, their mother’s love. They knew that the path of the leader was for them. |

Lyra, Of The Sky
Lyra was a rambunctious pup, always speaking her own mind, following her own path. For her first few months of life, she was content. But then she became restless. She hated her name, not having been given the name of Lyra yet. She hated sitting in the cave with her sitter, being coddled like a newborn. She wanted more. She wanted to meet more wolves, different wolves. Everyone in her pack had the black fur and skin, those characteristics setting them apart from every other pack of wolves. There were a few outcasts that lived at the edge of their territory that were not born with the right colors, that still carried the ability to have children with the black fur, but they were shunned for not fitting in. Lyra hated that wolves were judged on their outward looks. Just because she was lucky in the genetic lottery didn’t mean that other wolves were not as good. Her family prided themselves on their connection to the night sky, which had given them their special coloring far back in their lineage, but Lyra knew that they didn’t actually listen to the sky. They were prideful, for something which they had no control over, something that was only luck- casting aside the newborns that did not meet their standard- and they would fall because of their pride. So she left, making a promise that she would return when she was grown, to ‘continue the family name.’ It disgusted her. She didn’t want to continue their lines, but she knew she would be hunted down if she refused. It was in her future to have pups with someone that she didn’t even love. She knew that if she kept on going, listening to the sky, that she would be able to find her new family, but she was weak. Disaster after disaster weakened her on her travels, but eventually, she found the right place. The leader of the new pack, Jess, welcomed her, mothering instincts kicking in for the young Lyra. Lyra refused to tell Jess her name, the name she hated having, so Jess gave her a new name, borrowed from one of the sky’s constellations- Lyra. Lyra followed Jess on her daily rounds, to keep her company while she did her job. Jess taught her little things about the land, where to find pretty feathers, where to find food, which fights to avoid. This is where Lyra found her love for the wilderness, and she would later fill in for the role of pack scout. Then the day came in which she would have to return to her old pack, to meet her faceless suitor, already picked out for her at birth, and force herself to be with someone she had no love for. It was maddening, but it was all over quick, and she returned to her home with Jess and the rest of her pack, her real family, carrying a litter of pups. She could see Jess’ concern for her, but Jess didn’t push for answers. She suspected that Jess felt like Lyra was a reflection of herself, since they both had left their packs at a young age, although for different reasons. Jess didn’t know that Lyra had chosen of her own will to leave her pack. So Lyra told Jess, once her pups were born. She still refused to use names, or give places, but Jess began to understand. Jess, as a gift, fittingly, gave Lyra’s pups names, just as she had given Lyra a name. Enya, who was born without the gift of black fur and skin, Azula, who was gifted like Lyra was, and Cyran, who was born with beautiful red fur. And then Lyra finally gave a name to the pack she had decided to call home. The Flux pack. It was a good name, one that described the nature of change that every member seemed to embody. Lyra loved her pups, despite them being given to her without love. She cared for them faithfully, taught the younglings about the land around them, how to take care of themselves. When they reached the age of six months, she told them about their connection to the night sky, and how to find themselves using the stars. Her little star-children, she called the three of them. She hated to see them go when they were older, but she knew that they had to find their own home, their own family, as she had. To her delight, Azula decided to stay with the pack. Not long after she had her first litter, as her body was recovering from her pregnancy, she met Sirius. Sirius was an entirely black wolf, like her, but she didn’t know him from her old pack. He courted her, whispering sweet melodies in her ears, and she finally learned what love felt like- not the love of a family, but the love of a partner. Sirius was from a different pack, one where the all-black wolves- the sky wolves, as he called them- had never become proud and mean. They saw their role as that of servants, offering help and wisdom from the night sky to those that needed it. That was what her first pack was missing. They saw themselves as better than the rest, elevated themselves from the rest of the wolves, when they were supposed to be helpers, keepers of wisdom. Sirius joined her on her scouting missions, and they worked as a team. He took the role of the second scout, and, when Kierce had to leave for his own calling, he took the role of stud. It bothered Lyra for a while that he would have children with the other litter-bearing females, the sky-mothers, as they were called, but she eventually realized that it was out of duty, not love, that he did it. It was for the good of the pack, and the other females knew that, too. It didn’t bother her anymore, since she knew that she was the only one Sirius really cared about. When the time came for Sirius to leave, having been succeeded by Zenith, she was sad, but glad that he could move on with his life, free from the constraints of a pack, to adventure.

Nareena, Beauty Of The Snow Fur like a glacier, icy cold. What everyone sees of her is only the tip of the iceberg. Her haters tried to shatter her, into shards of ice and frost. But, the broken pieces- once picked up, those broken bits, those frozen fractals- made her even more beautiful, refracting the rays of the sun, blinding those who tried to make her stumble and fall. She prevailed, and remains as beautiful as the snow; those freshly fallen layers that cover the icy tundra that she was born from. Cast aside from her first pack because of resentment and jealousy, she fought her way, teeth, claw, and bone to her new home. She very nearly died in a spat with a pack of coyotes, covered in bite marks and blood. She had just about given up on her new life. But that was when the beautiful wolf appeared to her, fur and skin as dark as coal, a benevolent expression on their face. The black wolf picked her up by the nape of her neck- as if she were still a small puppy- careful to avoid touching her wounds. She doesn't remember what path they took exactly, she only knows that she ended up on the floor of a cave, surrounded by tinctures, ointments, and salves. The black wolf had disappeared in the one moment she closed her eyes. The old wolf, Flint, introduced himself to the badly injured Nareena, tending to her wounds. He assured her that he would take good care of her. He closed her torn skin, washed the blood out of her matted blue fur, and fed her. Her coat eventually became sleek, and silky again, her body gained muscle tone- she hadn't even realized that she had become malnourished during her wandering, the time had all blended together in her mind, leading to her forgetting to eat. Once she was healthy, wolves began to visit the herbalist's cave to greet her. There was Jess, the pack leader, asking Nareena about what accommodations she wanted in her new pack. There was Kierce, Jess's mate- who, she sadly never saw again. There were the endless streams of young pups, and wolves her age who came to greet their new pack member. She felt at home. There were more of the pure-black wolves, and the one who saved Nareena introduced herself as Lyra, the first of the night sky wolves to join the Flux pack. Nareena expressed her gratitude for Lyra’s help, and promised to do all she could to help her new pack. Flint, the herbalist took an interest in Nareena, teaching her the secrets of the land's herbs, which ones could heal, which ones could hurt, and in what proportions to mix everything together in order to heal. She was transfixed by the great ease in which Flint could craft cures and medicines of all sorts. She knew that this was her calling, and listened to his words studiously. There was one wolf her age who stood out to Nareena- Nadia. Nadia was beautiful like her, but that was not what caught Nareena’s eye. Nadia was precocious, always carving out her own path, a carefree spirit who took care of her own problems. That sort of thing was attractive to Nareena. It reminded her of herself, and how she had to go off on her own. Nadia would wait outside the herbalist cave for Nareena to finish her work, and invite her to play a game. Her eyes would sparkle, as they bounded off into the forest to tease the squirrels and bap the heads of glittering dragonflies. When the moon rose, they would howl at it, and, one night, after an afternoon of playing, they sat on top of one of the logs. Nadia was tired from the adventures, so she curled up next to Nareena to rest. Her eyes closed, the corner of her mouth turned up in a smile. Watching Nadia rest, Nareena’s fluffy tail laid over the sleeping wolf like a blanket, it felt so peaceful. She wanted to do this every night- she cared about Nadia. And she felt Nadia cared about her, too.

Flint, Healer Of Many (Deceased) He lent a paw to everyone, without discrimination, but there were a few he took a more special interest in. Those who had gone through deep hardship, those who needed a kind smile, an ear to listen. He never looked for a mate, because those he cared for were family enough. Flint was one of the first wolves to join the flux pack- although it was not named that yet- immediately taking up the empty role of healer. The adventurous wolves of the pack often came back with injuries and illnesses, and he always patched them back up. Although most of the first wolves left the pack for adventure, never coming back, Flint never had the urge to leave. He had found his place, and the pack had become his family. One of the wolves he had taken a special interest in was Nareena. She was young, not a pup anymore, but not an adult, either. Lyra had taken her to Flint, having found her broken and bleeding on one of her scouting runs. Bringing out his entire store of medicines, Flint set to work inside of his healer’s cave, putting Nareena back together again. The work was difficult, perhaps the hardest case he had ever worked on, but gradually, Nareena started to get better, her wounds healing up, her ill, malnourished body nursed back to health. He told her about his work, about the different herbs and medicines, and even after she was all better, she listened to his lessons, helping him with the making of his cures. Up in his years, and knowing that he doesn’t have much time left, he was satisfied to know that he would have a successor in this young wolf. At the age of seven years, eight and a half months, Flint died, having lived a long and fulfilling life. He had finished training Nareena, but the young wolf still had much to learn through experience. One always wishes that they had more time, and Flint surely did feel that way, but he felt that his time in the world had been put to good use. |
