Toggleable HTML

I support this. It's really annoying when I want to update posts, wolf profiles, and even my own den page. I don't want to use offsite editor like @Breezyb3 mentioned because I shouldn't have to go offsite just to navigate through a browser game. I'm also a mobile user mainly and going offsite just to format some text would be irritating because I can only have one page up in a browser at a time. I'd have to use two different browsers and then jump between them.

I'm willing to wait for a proper toggle as long as it comes.

A WYSIWYG style editor will not be returning to the site. While it is understandable that many people found it useful, it was not without a large number of issues. Several different WYSIWYG editors were trialed prior to Wolvden's release, and each one had its own problems. The trouble with including a 3rd party utility like this is that players rely on us to make it work, which in many cases is outside of our control.

To add on to that, it is not feasible for Wolvden to create or maintain its own WYSIWYG editor. The complexities of cross-browser compatibility and constant updates to devices & browsers makes such an endeavor a project entirely unto itself. This is why there are entire platforms dedicated to building and maintaining these types of projects.

Here is a brief look at a few of the plugins that are out there and that we spent time trying to incorporate:

  • Summernote, the editor that was most recently being used: 74 open issues
  • TinyMCE: 728 open issues
  • CKEditor 4: 1.1k open issues
  • CKEditor 5: 2k open issues and doesn't support code view at all
  • Quill: 1k open issues

It was not a decision made lightly to remove this capability, however it is in the best interest of the site to not spend development time trying to fix issues that are either outside of our control or to try to incorporate yet another broken editor.

If WYSIWYG style editing is something that you need, there are a number of tools out there that will let you create your content and output the HTML code, which you can then paste here onto Wolvden. This way, you have full control over your content creation and any issues that arise in individual editors can be addressed by the team that is focused on its maintenance.

I hope this post clears up some of the reasons why this change was made, as well as offers some insight into how you can continue to maintain your content going forward!
