So, I am new to the event and am a bit confused. It says you can collect essence during the daytime and my profile shows it as sunny/daytime here but despite exploring a single area from 100 to 0 energy wise, I cannot find ANY essence.

Is it only in certain biomes?

The event won't start until rollover, so you won't earn any essence until then.
