Change Hunt Quests

Change Hunt Quests

I have run into a problem with one of the new hunting quests. I have been given one of medium difficulty, and it asks that I complete 3 critter hunts. It doesn't sound that difficult, but I have only managed to find 2 critter trails out of 18 hunts today so far (and it is still winter). My worst hunting party had done 5 of those hunts so far, and only found one critter trail (the other was found by my middle hunting party). Typically I do not manage much more than 20 hunts in any one day. I am in the Riparian Woodland, and have been planning on moving to a more difficult biome this coming spring, which may help this issue, but it still can be difficult to handle. It also forces me to use my worst hunting party when I am trying to focus on my other two, since they are my main parties and I want to get them as leveled as possible before it is time to breed for their replacements. This quest is harder than the hard quests I have been given, simply because it is so specific.

I do not know the easiest way to fix this--having it take into consideration hunting party capability and current home biome to determine which level of trail to assign may be too complex of a fix. Perhaps instead of specific trails it can increase the amounts of hunts needed--say complete 6 hunts instead of 3 critter trails?
Or it could be 3 successful hunts.
Even picking two different difficulties might work--please complete 3 critter or small hunts? That way there are more opportunities for the right kind of trail to pop up.

**Editing to add that I believe a solution can be found that solves this problem and the reverse of it (too hard of trails). I have a post a bit farther down on page 1 mentioning the methods that may work better taking both sides of the matter into consideration.

I'd rather it not be based on successful hunts. That's what the old questing system did, and taking into account that they might not be successful is a big improvement with the new system.

I can see how this can be a problem, though. I got one for small trails and my hunting parties are almost too good, I didn't find many trails to complete the quest. If I got the critter one like you did, I definitely wouldn't have completed it; I almost never see critters anymore. It's unusual that it gives you quests to be less efficient than your hunters can be.

I've thought about it and hope this makes sense, but I have come up with the idea that the quests can have a minimum trail size requirement, not a specific one. By that I mean, say it asks for 2 small trails. It can say 'Complete 2 Small or bigger trails' or something like that. So for that small trail quest, you can hunt either a small, medium, or large - any of those options would count. The only one that wouldn't count is a critter trail, since it's smaller and easier than the others. If it asks for medium, only medium and large would count. So on, so forth.

This accounts for the stalkers that are just too darn good at their jobs, and can help use those daily hunts to their fullest potential, every time, all the time.

I live in Rainforest and the questing snake asked me to follow medium scent trails. I've never been capable of finding greater than small trails there so the snake literally asks me to get out of the biome. I must be jealous because your solutions seem to be relatively easier to handle.

Wow, I didn't know it could do that.

Oof.

I'm surprised there isn't something put in place to counteract a problem like that.

The only reason I mentioned successful hunts (I did doubt that it would be popular) is simply that I have never had issues previously completing that quest every day, it was probably my favorite because I was going to do the hunts anyway.

Another issue with the size of trail quest is that some people have large packs, so picking critter trails when they do pop up might not be feasible when they have that many mouths to feed.

But even for the flip side, changing the amount of trails while removing the size requirement might be one of the better solutions--it would mean that you have to send out more hunts (I would say 6 instead of three) but you would get to complete it a bit easier than searching for a specific size.

My favorite of the ideas is the more complicated one, simply because I feel that it would be more tailor made to each pack. The 'having it take into consideration hunting party capability and current home biome to determine which level of trail to assign' idea. We already get a percent chance of success on trails, so I would think it would be able to look at some similar calculation to determine which trails are most likely to pop up (the math is probably already in the backend for this) and then randomly select out of your 2 more likely trail sizes which one you get for the quest. I am not a coder, however, so I may be horribly wrong. This solution would meant that everyone, no matter where they live, would be able to get trail sizes suited to their hunting parties. (Hopefully that makes sense, I shouldn't be trying to type this in the morning before I am fully awake)

(As an aside, I have gotten the 3 critter trail quest again today. I would totally trade it for a medium trail quest)

Big support! I like taking the biggest trails possible for exp/food. It doesn't make sense to force players to take worse trails than they need to.

Don't support

I think that's very player-specific: I, for example, mostly find critter and small trails. I am aware that if I got a quest asking for medium trail hunts, I would have to change biome for an easier one, or just skip that quest.
I had to weight food against exp gain when I decided whether I would move to my current biome, and this quest makes you weight sc gain against food/exp. The fact that it forces you to make choices doesn't make it a bad mechanic imo.
If I could complete litterally every quest by just... continuing to play normally, I would find it less interesting.

I also don't support, for the same reason Dzanek described -- but this quote hits the nail on the head.

"The 'having it take into consideration hunting party capability and current home biome to determine which level of trail to assign' idea. I'd much rather be given something I CAN do, such as critter trails/completing successful hunts, than something physically impossible -- like the hard quest I've been given in the RF today to find 2 large trails when nobody in the game has accomplished that task yet. My best hunting team can barely locate small trails, so while I empathize with the struggle of a harder quest here . . . I really think that the hunts a player is asked for SHOULD depend on their biome and capability.

ETA: My teams are pretty capable, too -- it's not for lack of grinding or playing every day, because I'm pretty on top of my pack. It's just frustrating to rely on snake skulls when it could be tweaked to at least be /doable/.

I am sorry if it was not clear, but I do support finding a solution that works for both sides of this issue! I merely had not thought of it from the too big of trails perspective, since I have only seen the critter trail quest. If anyone has any other ideas that may be a potential solution to this matter, I would love to hear them.

Support.

I ended up with a quest for 2 large hunts, but I am in a biome where I'm only getting critter and small trails. Having to do a full biome swap to complete a quest feels like way too much.
