A Leader's Questions...

Posted 2021-11-15 12:18:48
After a moment's hesitation, the plump, ruddy brown wolf stepped forward, his tail waving slightly in a gesture of friendship. "Well, being honest...there haven't been that many broken bonds in our pack. Not that I've heard of, anyway," he hurried to add. "Except after a passing." He winced a little. "...But I've heard that when my aunts Porrie and Balya got together, they came to my father and pledged their love in front of the fire in the leader's den. Then he blessed them, and they've been joined at the hip ever since. I reckon if they wanted to split, they could do the same thing, but the other way around. I'll have to ask Elkheart if it's been done."

His eyes lit up a little as he looked around the group. "Say--that brings a question to mind. We've got our eternal fire, but I figure that's sort of a funny thing. Do any of you have a special place in your territory? Somewhere that's important, where you go to sing together or where mates make their vows?"

SpottedStar's eyes shone at the question."We have the Mooncave, where our medicine wolf here" - she nodded at a  red spotted young she-wolf- "speaks to the spirits and to our ancestors. She helps the newly deceased wolves's spirits find their way to SpiritClan." The medicine wolf said shyly, "It's a thing only us medicine wolves know how to do, and we do more things there that I'd like not to share."
Spottedstar looked kindly at her, then glanced around the gathering and asked: "Do your medicine wolves (herbalists) have special tasks?"

"Actually, yes." Radix cleared his throat. "Our herbalists are sort of like mediums- if you know what I mean. They contact spirits." Radix looked at a albino she-wolf, who nodded in confirmation. He turned back to the other alpha. "Keeping the spirits pleased helps the pack. Somehow. I've personally never believed in that kind of thing, but traditions are traditions."
Radix turned to the wolf next to him. "Now for a more interesting question (radix no nice). Why has your pack chosen the territory that you own?"

Fy Anwylyd stepped forward after a second of hesitation. "Currently we're in the Deciduous Forest but we're travelling. Our home in the Mountains was chosen for the large amounts of prey and the environment to raise a strong and well connected pack." Her tail swished slowly, already looking forward to returning home. "We've been away from our home for three sunrises and should be returning tomorrow."

The Queen looked around the area, cloudy blue eyes catching on another wolf. "How do you decide what wolves stay? Our pack is rather careful of what wolves stay but recently we've been fairly open to new pups."

Rain tipped her head slightly. "Well, it's a sort-of 'test' I suppose. Once pups are one month old, they're evaluated by myself and Crystal, judging based on appearance and fitness. If they pass that test, they are then evaluated by the spirits. Basically, Crystal preforms a ritual that involves burning certain herbs, and if the spirits deny the pups, they fail the test. Though we and the mother  do get a certain amount of leeway here." She scratched at the ground absentmindedly as she spoke. "Every pup who fails the test is a Nameless. Names are incredibly important in our pack, its an extension of your soul and your place in the pack. Every individual without a name, if they survive, is chased off or killed on their first birthday. Without a name, they have no ties to our pack, and as such have no place here."

Rain glanced around for a moment, before settling on a random individual nearby. "You there. Does your pack have a code? A set of rules that everyone must follow? If so, what is it? We have the Soul Code, it's regularly updated with input from every adult, and it outlines the rights and expectations of everyone in the pack, even myself."

Rain calmly regards the leader who asked, though her voice carries a hint of pride for her pack. "Yes, my pack has a code based off of a system I created quite recently actually." She trails off as she watches some of her more rambunctious pack members roughhousing close by, one of them bumps into the leader who asked Rain the question. "Be more careful please, Storm," Rain tells the young wolf kindly. He apologizes and gets the other playing wolves to move father away, his lilac and cream tail trailing the leaves on the ground slightly. After a moment Rain sighs and turns back to the leader, "Sorry about that," she laughs lightly before continuing, "We have a council so that the more experienced wolves can add their opinions and thoughts to the important decisions that we have to decide upon, these choices often effect the pack in some way. Older wolves become mentors to teach the pups important lessons."

She tries to look for a leader who hasn't spoken yet, before spotting someone sitting quietly. "Does your pack have any traditions to follow? Maybe something to honor the dead or those who have to leave? For my pack, when a wolf dies we mourn and remember all they have done for us and the great memories and moments they brought us in the time we had them here beside us, we do something similar for those who must leave the pack as well." She tilts her head, grey ears flicked forward curiously.

The rather plain gray she-wolf with a couple dark markings was observing the other pack leaders speak, though not participating in the discussion herself. A council seemed like an intriguing idea - in her pack her packmates mostly did what they wished and were disciplined directly from her. Of course, with the rapidly growing group of wolves she was beginning to rely on her trusted wolves such as Slate, Rose, or Lizard but that was all unofficial. Perhaps she should implement a similar system as well. Fidgeting with the small crown of arnica that one of her pupsitters - Arnica, ironically - had given her her ears pricked up slightly as another question was addressed. Perhaps she should answer this time - Iris had been silent for long enough.

"As we are a younger pack we have not had many deaths - two, in fact." The first had been one of her best friends and the loyal pupsitter Aspen, who had died of natural causes - the second poor Sunlight who had been mauled by an enemy pack beyond repair. The green-eyed wolf appeared to be lost in a memory for a second before pulling herself back to attention, blinking at the other leaders rather nervously. "For those two, though, we have buried a small amount of silver cones each - and a nesting material for Aspen, to symbolize his caring attitude. We all gathered together to howl for our lost packmates -"

Iris continued, considering the wolves who had left with a slight movement of her head. There had been several - Rainbow, her apprentice Cherry Blossom and Obsidian had been peacefully exchanged to other packs, some like Lotus and her own pups Bluebriar and Olive to the stars knew where. "...We do not perform any specific rituals for a wolf who leaves of their own will, though often we would offer a small token such as a herb or prey item for them to wish them good luck on their journey."

"As for my question... are there any traditions you have that relate to a specific time of the year or day?" Iris asked before shutting her muzzle, olive-colored eyes glinting with curiosity.

"Indeed there are. Christmas morning we alway woke up early but waited until six am to leave our rooms. We always came out to full stocking and cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Later we would have all sorts of munchies to eat throughout the day."

" and now for my question. Do you have a favorite animal that you try to model you wolves after?"

"Hmm.. We don't, but I have found that a big majority of our pack's favorite animal are deer. We even have a friend that's half deer, half human! Strange, isn't it... Well, before getting carried away, now I should ask you a question."

"Why did you choose the biome you live in? What are some perks, and the downsides?"

She considered the question for a moment. It was intriguing. The Flowering Meadows Pack had moved many times - first they had lived in the Grasslands, when there were less than ten members in the entire pack. Iris had been raised in the Grasslands as a pup, it was the natural biome for the young dispersal wolf to live in.

And then the pack started growing, puppies were born in the pack including her own - the wolves of the pack grew to find the Grasslands dull and voted to move somewhere more spacious. So they'd moved into the mountains after a little confrontation with the enemy packs there.

The mountains had been nice - a bit rougher, maybe, with less of the flowers she so loved but being in the open, fresh air gave all her pack a nice change. Until several puppies disappeared after a span of a couple days - found ripped apart by coyotes or stranger wolves. The pack's very first deaths - it had shocked everyone. When her poor, best friend Aspen who had been one of the co-founders of the pack died in a landslide it had been the last straw for many of them. After discussion they decided to move once more, this time to the Tundra.

The Tundra was an interesting place, especially when they first moved in late winter. Many slim, water-dwelling creatures she had never seen before. So much snow - it was lovely, and suited Iris the best.

She returned to the loose gathering of leaders - the other wolves were probably getting impatient due to her internal monologue. She did that, a lot.

"Well, the Tundra is a nice place - very beautiful, especially in warmer weather. Even if hunting patrols were no longer so efficient as opposed to, say, the Grasslands walrus and seal carcasses are easy to come by making food plentiful. After so many of our pups died in the Mountains due to accidents involving predators and rockslides we as a pack decided to move.- fellow packs let us know there was good scavenging in the Tundra. There truly is, and I recommend this home."

Time for her own question, then.

"Many wolves wear decorations in their fur or on certain parts of their bodies - is this practice widely spread in your own pack as well? Why do you give your packmates these decorations? Do you have any specific traditions regarding these decorations?"
