Lead Stat Grinding Guide

Lead Stat Grinding Guide

Howdy! If you've wanted to get your lead on the stats leaderboard but weren't quite sure where to start, or what strategies are optimal, then look no further! In the following guide I will share everything I have learned from my (late) lead Advesperascit, other leaderboard players, and modbox to save you from inevitable frustration.

If you want nothing to do with the stat grind I can't really blame you tbh, it's pretty tedious sometimes, perhaps this will pique your interest: I spent 3,419 GC to make Advesperascit the way he is, from buying his parents to the fox parts to the RMAs to the guarana and the decor... Everything! (If this is intimidating I didn't spend any IRL money to do it!). However... he made it all back and then some through stud fees alone. So. It can be a lucrative prospect. I think I had lucky timing as well because most of the high stat wolves were related to a few big names and people were thirsty for new blood, so more super stat lines is always a good thing!

This is not meant to be a comprehensive battle guide - you can find that HERE - but rather a collection of strategy, tips, and tricks that worked for me!

General Overview

Other than extremely rare explore encounters, the only way to gain stats on your lead is by winning battles against enemies that are a high enough level (more about that later). So you will want to conserve energy so you can find more enemies, and use plenty of lucky feet, healing salves, and a good battle strategy to ensure you win as many battles as you can.

Who to Pick for a Lead?

In short: whoever you want! There are multiple strategies; all are valid. You should pick one that appeals to you and what you are most interested in. However, some options are easier than others. Most people universally recommend high strength as the top stat, followed by agility and smarts. I prefer in that order, but some people swear by smarts and think it tops agility as the second most important stat. I'll go over why in the strategy section. Speed does help in battles but less so, and wisdom does nothing. This has been Modbox confirmed

Easy: Buy a high-stat wolf that has already been trained and leveled, and crown them when your lead dies! You'll have a jumpstart on stats because they will have a higher baseline.

Pros:
  • Battles will be easier because you will more quickly and more often get +1 bonuses on your dice rolls due to their already high stats.
  • You won't have to gain as many stats through battling to get on the leaderboards.
Cons:
  • Will likely have a long or popular lineage, which makes avoiding inbreeding more difficult. If you don't care personally that's fine! But know it can make for a less attractive stud, or pups that don't sell for as much.
  • Depending on how high stats you want, this can be somewhat expensive. Pups from the very highest-stat leaderboard female usually sell for quite a lot - upwards of 100 or even 200 GC depending on lineage and marks.
Medium: Train at least two good wolves and use a pup from their last (highest-stat) litter. Full disclosure: this is the option I went with for my leaderboard lead Advesperascit, starting with two NBWs. This is my favored option so I am admittedly biased. I made one of the NBWs my lead to ensure he lived until 8 years old. That also gave me an introduction to battling in earnest (I just ignored it before) and gave me an idea of what to expect.

Pros:
  • You can train the pup(s) how you want.
  • If you start with unbred NBWs and pairbond or use your own private stud, you control the lineage.
  • If you start with lower stat parents (like NBWs), the pups will inherit a greater percentage of the parent's stats. This is because the stat inheritance formula begins to plateau once the combined parent's stats (for a single stat) get to about 400. Eventually you reach a point of diminishing return where a huge increase in parent stats results in a small increase in pup stats.
Cons:
  • This takes a long time, and requires you to train at least two wolves as scouts or hunters in a difficult biome (or one as a lead) to get the highest stats at level 20.
  • This will work for any pairbond, but most of the benefits are contingent on something else and require starting with NBWs.
  • Depending on the wolves you start with, this could also be quite expensive - even more so than the easy option above.
  • If you are hoping for a certain base, mark, eye color, mutation, etc. in the offspring, the cruel RNG could mess up your careful plans by giving you absolutely nothing, even with a white sage. Because of this, it would be worth it to train more than one potential mother.
Hard: use a NBW. Best case scenario would be a chased NBW under 1 year 6 months old and >270 stats, with whatever other traits you want. Keep in mind regular NBWs have stats that scale with age - younger NBWs will have lower stats. But chased wolves keep their age while stats are rolled randomly. The best I have ever seen is 282. I would prioritize young over high stat, though, because stats can be made up in time but age can't be reversed.

Pros:
  • No heritage! Blank slate for you to do whatever you want with the line and the wolf.
  • If you find the NBW yourself, this option can be free!
  • Now, with the heritageless leaderboards, there is more visibility for high stat NBWs.
Cons:
  • Battling with a NBW sucks. They start with low stats and will get -1s on most dice rolls for the better part of their life. You will likely win fewer battles and consequently earn fewer stats. The odds are stacked against you, and you have to keep that up throughout most or all of your wolf's lifetime and not suffer burnout or frustration. Good luck.
  • You will use a lot of healing salves and lucky feet. Of course, you will need them for all the other options as well, but this one will use the most.

Some people like training their heir up to level 10 or so by scouting before making them lead. However, I disagree. Pack wolves are capped at two, or very rarely three stats per RO, and if you can play often enough leads can get many more than that. Additionally, you are missing out on your lead's lower levels, which could be the most lucrative stat-gaining window of their whole life. I explain why in the next section.

Which Enemies to Fight

Only fight the enemies that have the chance to award a stat! This is dependent on your lead's level.

For leads levels 1-18
  • Enemies who are 3 levels below your lead and up have the chance at dropping a stat. So you will want to focus your attention on these enemies only. Skip past low level enemies unless you encounter one on your last bit of energy and want to try for a trophy (level 5+ enemies only).
    • For this reason, the lower your lead level, the larger the range of enemies you can get a stat from. At low enough levels, you have a chance for a stat from nearly every enemy encounter - provided you can win. While at higher levels you need to skip a majority of enemies because they are too low level. This is why I like starting my lead from a late adolescent / early adult, so they get the benefit of pup training along with the ability to get stats from almost every fight.
  • Enter battles with MOST* high level enemies anyways! I have found felines and small canids to be the easiest enemy type. Who knows, you might get lucky on an early bleed and can wait it out for a large exp boost. It helps if you already have a high stat lead, and probably won't work as well with NBWs. But if you get bled right away or your first few attacks aren't successful, you can always retreat.
    • * I would caution doing this versus overleveled bears and anacondas, as they can easily grapple/constrict you and prevent you from retreating. This causes you to waste energy trying to escape as they slowly squeeze the life out of you, making the potential losses much greater on the likely chance you don't succeed.

For leads levels 19-20
  • All opponents level 15 and up have a chance at awarding a stat. This seems a lot more straightforward, and it mostly is, but there is another trick you can use to find the maximum number of useful battles.
    • There are some encounters that throw you into a battle right away without telling the level of the enemy beforehand, such as "harass" the walruses in the glacier or "keep moving forward" when you see all the animals scurrying towards you.
    • While in the battle screen, you can still figure out the enemy's level by the total amount of HP it has, shown in the upper right corner. Each enemy of the same type has a set amount of HP based on what level it is. This way you can tell at a glance if you should engage (because it might drop a stat), or retreat immediately (and not waste your energy on battling it).
    • The enemies listed below are level 15 when:
      • Sweet Scent Wolf: Level 15 = 45 hp (all biomes)
      • Climb the rocks cougar: Level 15 = 46 hp (desert and rainforest)
      • Search for the mom elephant seal: 48 hp (Tundra, sometimes does not result in battle)
      • Harass walrus: Level 15 = 48 hp (Glacier)
      • Harass walrus group: Level 15 = 50 hp
    • So this means if you are level 19 or 20, you should battle any of these encounters that have the listed amount of HP or more.
    • If you encounter a different enemy type than listed here, make note of their HP and check your user log. It will list the level of the enemy you encountered.
  • Of course, this works with lower level leads as well, but I haven't figured out the HP for every enemy and level, and if you are going to do as much battling, your lead will be level 20 for most of their time so I never bothered to figure it out.
A stat will drop from about 20% of all victories with enemies of the correct level - remember, level 15+ or no more than 3 below your lead. It fluctuates wildly day by day, but appears to even out around there.

How to Conserve Energy

  1. Try to explore on as little energy as possible. This means checking in every 10 minutes and burning through the 10% energy you have accumulated. Why? Because you can battle at zero energy, but you cannot explore with it.
    • For example, if you fight a bear with 5 energy left but it takes 20 energy to fight, you only use up that 5 energy, and can use the full 10% again as soon as it regenerates. However, if you started with 50 energy, now you are down to 30, and that was 15 energy wasted that could have been used to find another battle.
    • When you fight at 0 energy, there is a penalty, and your attacks do less damage. However, this does not decrease the chance to bleed. Since most damage comes from bleed anyway, it's not overly crippling.

  2. For the same reason, I always explore the lunar dreamlands on 0% energy so I can save it for regular explore. This helps not only to find more enemies, but also gather essence!

  3. The best strategy to limit energy used during battling is get the enemy to bleed, then wait.
    • More detailed battle strategy will be covered in the next section.

  4. When exploring, always choose the option that restores energy (Sleep instead of Rest), and don't accidentally skip the animal encounters that award you bonus energy!

How to Win Battles

  1. Use lots of healing salves and lucky feet! They will help you immensely and are cheap compared to energy (guarana).
    • Heal right before you enter a battle if your lead has 10 or so less health than the maximum.
      • I know this wastes half a use of healing salve, but you'll be wasting a lot more if you lose! Sometimes the extra health can make all the difference.
    • If your lead is battling a much higher level enemy, or a difficult enemy like a bear, use a lucky foot right away. Otherwise I usually use one if I don't get a bleed within the first two or three attacks. You can modify it based on what works for you, and eventually when my lead had high enough stats he didn't need to use them as much.
    • For a rough estimate on how many you'll need? Advesperascit used a grand total of 1,938 lucky feet, 4,398 uses of healing salve, and 40 uses of rich healing salves across his 191 days of being a lead. Of course, you don't need to have them all at the beginning - I don't think I had more than 200 at any given time! It works out to a little more than 10 lucky feet or 24 uses of healing salve per RO.
      • How can you get that many? It helps to have a previous lead not care about battling and just collect lucky feet and healing salves through explore, then not use or sell any. You can also make them tickets for raffles, buy them on the TC, or set up "looking for" trades and see the offers you get.
      • Also remember herbalists make 3 use healing salves (up from 2) when they hit 80% proficiency!

  2. Look at the dice! A green dice of 4 and up indicates a success. Hover over them with your mouse on PC or tap them on mobile to see a tooltip. I will show screenshots below. So depending on if you get a +1 bonus or a -1 debuff to each roll can help you decide what attacks or moves are best for that enemy type and your lead's stat distribution.
    • Bite is always -1. So without other modifiers on the enemy, you need to roll 5 or 6 to get a successful bleed.
    • Latch and Crush are -1 with low strength, no modifier with medium strength, and +1 with high strength. With a +1, you can roll 3, 4, 5, or 6 to get a bleed, effectively doubling your chances. This is why strength is generally thought of as the most useful lead stat.

  3. Inflicting bleed twice is best, but you can get by with one if you have more than twice the HP of your enemy and think you can tank the hits. More bleeds than 2 are useless because they do not stack; enemies can get a -2 debuff on waiting from being severely wounded but not -3.

  4. However, you can get what is effectively a +3 bonus by giving the enemy -2 and yourself +1 by either a lucky foot or a successful focus. This is why some people think smarts are the second most important lead stat, and why I almost always focus as the opening move. All the other options that make the enemy intimidated (snarl, not based on stats) or make them tired (chase, based on speed), do not stack with bleed past -2.

  5. I still like agility, though, because it can help you dodge the enemy's special attack and avoid insta-bleeds from bears, birds, walruses, and things with hooves, which is most enemies. Additionally, you need to win the first roll to get a chance to use your special attack and focus, but if you lose the first roll the agility check happens automatically.

  6. Check the dice and find a strategy that works for your lead! If they are not very smart it may be a better strategy to snarl (not based on any stat, 50/50 shot of success) or chase (+1 for high speed or prey animals), then use a.lucky foot if you get too wounded during battle. No matter how you get there, though, the general flow of battle should be to get the enemy to bleed and then wait for them to bleed out. If you have high strength, latching is preferred. If you have low strength, the odds of a successful roll are the same as bite, but you need to win two attacks in a row (one to latch and one to shear/crush), so it can fail more often. I also latch against snakes because if you can hold them, they cannot counterattack and poison you.

  7. If you do get bleed inflicted on you, try to rest and recover. If you don't, it's rarely worth it to stick around and try to win unless you can essentially stun-lock them in crush. At the end of Advesperascit's life when he had super high stats I could do it and win while bleeding, but earlier when I didn't have a high strength bonus I didn't bother. Just retreat and save your energy, HP, and lucky foot if you have one active!
    • However, if you have enough HP, it may be worth it to attack more and delay resting until the enemy has a double bleed. You only get the chance to rest once - after that it's gone, and you can only wait. So if you get another bleed inflicted, you can't heal it. When the enemy has two bleeds, you also get a better modifier on resting, making it less likely that you will get bled again. So waiting to rest can be beneficial and help you win more battles if you know when to use it!

Miscellaneous Tips

The biome you are in dictates which enemy types you find, and certain enemy types drop certain stats. For example, bears and walruses mostly award strength, and snakes and felines often give agility. For this reason, you can (somewhat) control the stats you get by selectively exploring in certain biomes.

Glacier heavily favors strength; Erő here explored almost exclusively there. While in the rainforest you run into anacondas and jaguars, which bias agility (although to a lesser extent than glacier with strength). This can be seen from Gabre here, who mostly liked to explore the rainforest. If you would like a general idea of which enemies drop which stats, Here's a log every stat Advesperascit gained - all 1474 of them - and what enemy he got them from. I mostly explored in the rainforest, glacier when I had a scout in the rainforest, and a little tundra when I needed food. This log is from a whopping 7,390 battles won versus enemies of the correct level, so 19.9% of victories ended up with a stat.

Dice Image Gallery

The first roll checks one of your stats against the enemy's (dependent on enemy type; for instance, bears often use strength and felines speed and agility). Here, even though Advesperascit has a +1 to strength, he rolled a one (+1 modifier for a total of 2) and lost the roll, so the bear got to make a special attack.

Because he (barely) won the agility check with a roll of 3 +1, he dodged the special attack and didn't get insta-bled (this is why I like agility!)

Now here, Advespreascit won the first move and gets to pick a special attack.

I chose focus and succeeded, then got him to bleed with latch and crush...

And now he has basically a +3 on waiting, making it impossible to lose. (This is why some people like smarts!) The focus is there, but the box is too small to show it!

Because even if I roll a 1, with the +1 focus and -2 (from the enemy) of badly wounded, that's a 4 which is always a good outcome.

If you don't get a successful focus, you can still achieve this with a double bleed and a lucky foot, or a single bleed plus another enemy debuff like tired or scattered and a lucky foot.

You should always look at the dice rolls to see what modifiers you are getting and adjust your strategy as necessary! As soon as you have the +1 strength for latch and crush your battles will get significantly easier.

I figured this might be interesting for anyone who wants to know what they can expect in terms of number of stats per day and guarana to use! I kept pretty meticulous stats on my boi, so you can base your expected stat gain on how many enemies you can defeat per day.

I think it is completely doable to get a high stat and fully pup trained G2 onto the leaderboards in its current state with little guarana - only dedication and persistence. However, if it continues to be this ridiculously competitive, you likely won't get into the top 3, possibly top 5, without a decent stash of guarana or a frankly unhealthy dedication to the grind. I stopped using guarana after he got to 2,000 stats and he still managed to get quite a lot.

To spare you the math, Advesperascit used 242 guarana. I probably didn't buy all of them, but that's still probably over 1,000 GC. Take heart, though: I didn't spend a single cent of IRL money on it, and he ended up making it back in stud fees. So this can be a lucrative proposition.

I hope these numbers are interesting to you! Best of luck, and godspeed.
