Chantaey's Wolvlocke: CE Game 2 - Ended

Day 21: Summer, Year 1 From what I can tell the pups have all been born safely! It's wonderful to see Haya and Maleko settled into a den as it will make my observations much easier! I'm so excited about this development I can hardly keep my thoughts straight. My equipment tells me there are five pups, three males and two females. One male and two females bear a resemblance to their parents' coats while the other two seem to have more earthy colors. The palest of the pups I've named Fimbulvetr for the winter the precedes Ragnarok, and the brightest of the earthy pups I've named Musgo for he almost looks as though he's been rolling in fresh green moss! I'll continue to work on names and monitor their progress. The promise of new life is so uplifting! Today's Events:

Day 22: Summer, Year 1 *Research Report added for Day 21 The rest of the pups have received names; the largest male is Blue, because the color of his coat is undeniable, the other female I've named Sifa, a word that sounds like the Thai word for blue--she really looks so similar to her older brother, and finally the other earthy male has been named Muscadine after the grapevine plant because, well, he looks like a little grape! Haya and Maleko still work on their hunting and although they do not find an excess now as they seemed to be doing in Spring, they do well enough and have stored well from their plentiful time in spring. Every spare moment goes to the pups. Maleko seems particularly smitten with them, always nosing at them and lying nearby or attempting to play with them though their eyes have hardly opened. If his tenderness continues I expect his personality will provide a good balance to Haya's typically harder nature. Thus far she does not seem impatient or rough with them so I can, at least, attest to some of her mothering instincts. If this changes as they get older I hope it only serves to prepare them more. Day 25: Autumn, Year 2 All of the pups have survived to autumn. Both Haya and Maleko remain well-fed and both are proving to be good parents, taking their turns caring for the pups and hunting to feed them. The last few weeks have not been without excitement; watching the pups grow as rapidly as they do has been engrossing enough but of course some of them seem a little apt to get into danger. As summer was beginning to wind down, Blue, the largest of the pups found a beehive just a little unwisely close to the ground. Perhaps it was the smell of the honey or the sound of the bees but the little pup seemed a little too curious and without caution tried to help himself to the contents of the hive. I honestly thought we would lose him at that point--it's hard to believe a pup so young could be stung so many times and survive but he somehow seems none the worse for wear and still shows a keen interest in the hive. Only a couple weeks later the second largest pup, Musgo, made an attempt to follow Haya and Maleko as they went off to hunt. He was quick to fall behind but rather than turning for home continued onward. Even I wasn't able to follow him--losing sight of him in the brush not long after he seemed to have lost his parents. He was gone for hours, and again I thought we had lost a pup, but he did eventually wander home with little more harm than a bit of a limp. These are very lucky pups, for sure. More recently, the pups have gained more mobility--they exhibit the usual rough and tumble behavior. Blue developed a heavy limp just a week ago and Fimbulvetr seems to be pawing obsessively at his forehead. It's fun to watch them but so very hard to keep up! Heavens know what they've been getting into. They will be weaned soon and start eating their own portions of the game Haya and Maleko hunt. This means they will start joining their parents at mealtimes, learning the hierarchy of their small pack, and will begin journeying away from their den. They are certainly not out of danger, however--born so late in the season, I expect it will be another couple months before they are big and strong enough to really be beyond the risk of the accidents of youth or predators and by then, winter will nearly be upon us again. Day 26: Autumn, Year 2 I think perhaps I should have named Blue Trouble; he's gone and hurt himself again during a bit of play with his siblings. At first when I saw him somersault mid-run I thought it was a usual puppy tumble but in fact he spent several moment after struggling to pull his paw free from some sort of hole. It seems as though he's been walking with a limp for the last several weeks but whatever he's done this time clearly seems to pain him. Still, he is young, and I expect if he can be more careful he will heal up just fine. Now that the pups are weaned, Maleko seemed more focused on teaching the pups skills they will need when they get older and so I watched Haya strike out on her own to try her chances at some hunting. My first thought was for how much energy it would take for her to hunt solo, and how fewer opportunities she would have to provide food, but those concerns mean little now; although she was able to bring home a stoat for her efforts, she seems to have had a run-in with another predator, a bear perhaps, and is badly wounded. I think it's safe to say Maleko will be left to do the hunting for the family in the near future. I can only hope Haya heals, and heals quickly. Today's Events:

Day 28: Autumn, Year 2 Haya's wound still is not healed. She has resumed hunting with Maleko and they are still catching enough food to keep themselves and the pups fed, but Haya herself has stopped eating. I worry about whether she will be able to recover--it is already clear she is weakening--and I fear she only has a few weeks left if her condition does not improve. The pups, on the other hand, seem to have grown enough to be past most dangers presented by puppyish accidents and predators but they will of course continue to grow; they should reach adolescence mid-winter and their appetites will surely grow as fast as they are. Day 29: Autumn, Year 2 Just when I was beginning to worry Haya pulled through. She doesn't appear to be fully recovered yet but she is most certainly out of the woods and the wound seems finally to be closing into a scar. I was imagining how hard it would be to lose her just as winter crept around the corner... Maleko has resumed his duties teaching the pups, a task that went neglected after Haya was injured in favor of getting as much hunting in as possible. Haya, for her part, now waits for Maleko to go hunting rather than striking out on her own. I suspect she now recognizes his hunting skills to allow him to almost exclusively teach the pups but regardless it gives her extra time for some much needed rest. Today's Events:
