HISTORY AND FOUNDING || FROM FREE GRASS TO THE MOUNTAINS OF THE SKY

" A tale told by Epona, who first brought the Horselords to the Mountains of the Sky. "

The Horselord Pack is ancient, much more ancient than I, my mother, my mother's mother, and all the generations of mothers before her. We came to the free-grass prairie following along the hoof-paths of the horses, who in that day were smaller and our prey. Indeed, they stayed our prey, and we grew alongside them, forever intertwining the destiny of the wolves of the Horselord Pack with that of the horses.

It seemed that the Horselords belonged to the prairie - we had been there for generations, after all, and the thought of us ever having to leave.. well, it wasn't something one thought about. But all good things had to end, and one day, the end came for my Pack, in the form of rival wolves, eager for territory, caring nothing for the prairie and the horses that lived there except for how they could sate their greedy bellies. My pack was slaughtered... my mother, my father, all of my friends and siblings were overwhelmed by the numbers and strength of these strange wolves. I, and my pack-sister Hippa were the only survivors. We fled to the Mountains of the Sky, those towering peaks of myth... Now we look to make this place our home, rebuild, and maybe, one day, return to the land of the free-grass of which we were born.

THE PACK

ALPHA - The leader of the pack. They are responsible for the organization of the pack, from organizing hunts, patrols, ceremonies, and more. A position that can be occupied by either gender, the Alpha must be confirmed by both the spiritual leader of the pack as well as the regular members.

BETA - The Alpha's right hand, and in most cases will take the Alpha's place upon their death, but the Beta can also be a 'generational position', that is, the same wolf will remain beta under multiple Alphas. They perform similar tasks to the Alpha, especially minor tasks the Alpha delegates to them.

HEALER - The spiritual leader of the pack, as well as the one who cares for their physical and emotional well-being. Along with retired elders, whose wisdom is much-sought, they mediate disputes and provide comfort. They perform spiritual ceremonies alongside the Alpha, and will often take an apprentice to support them in their tasks.

HUNTERS - Consists of Chasers, Stalkers, and Warriors, who are all responsible for different parts of the hunt. Chasers are swift and agile and help wear out and drive the prey to exhaustion. Stalkers track the prey- this position requires both smarts and physical ability. Warriors take the prey down, and this job requires strong wolves, not afraid to get into the thick of it.

PUPSITTERS - A highly important role that involves caring for the pups of the pack and keeping them safe from harm.

ELDERS - Any wolf that has retired from their duties, whether because of injury or because of age. These wolves are both valued because of their contributions to the pack in their youth as well as for their skill as mediators- as well as gossipers!

PUP - any wolf that is under six months of age.

OMEGA - A wolf that has reached adolescence - they spend their time learning the ways of the pack and will eventually select their role once they come of age.
