Otherwise I don't see why I should be paying for Grove items and still get ads. Normally, when you pay for an online service, that disables ads. Perhaps a better idea is to turn Wolvden into a monthly subscription service, where your payments are tiered, and you get a steady supply of GCs while supporting the site ad-free. I mainly say this because I noticed I tend to spend $10 on Wolvden every month anyway, as that's usually how long my GC currency lasts before I have a need for it again. Sometimes I'll spend more, sometimes I go inactive for a few months, so it's not consistent, but a subscription (that could be paused, perhaps) might encourage a more steady stream of income for the site. Players who don't subscribe would then see the ads, but could still have the option of one-time purchasing of GCs. Similar to other people, I use a powerful Ad Blocker, as well as a cookie/tracker eraser and VPN almost constantly while I'm online. I despise ads with a burning passion and would much rather support the game with my own money than see them. They're distracting and annoying and probably my biggest pet peeve in modern life. I would be unable to use the site, no matter how "unobtrusive" the ads would be, I can't ignore them because that's just how I am. Ads are designed to target the subconsious mind with things you don't need just to get you to spend more money and contribute to waste production and consumerist culture, they rarely offer anything of value. I don't think I've ever clicked on an online ad in my life. |

Additionally, advertising companies can be strict about the kinds of websites their ads are associated with. There have already been people (unreasonably, IMO) upset about certain details of animals' anatomy being visible in Wolvden and Lioden's art; advertisers can and will join in on that outrage. Look at the state of YouTube: videos about perfectly natural biological processes can be demonetized because the advertisers don't want their products associated with those things for whatever silly reasons. One of my favorite things about Wolvden is the lack of ads. No support. |

For Wolvden, I think it should be a grove item costing 10GC or whatever the irl money equivalent of that is that will allow you to post a little advert that is up for 30 days! It would go here: BUT ANY BIG, ANNOYING ADS THAT DON'T EVEN DO ANYTHING FUN WILL MAKE ME GO FIND A NICE ADBLOCKER |

I like having one site where I don't have ads shoved down my throat every time a page loads in. I like not having crap flashing in the corners and pop-ups that switch to different images constantly. Then there's the whole moderating aspect. Some shady shit can slip through sometimes. I understand user-driven ads for on-site shops is different, but I don't care. I'm sick and tired of ads. Just please, let this be a rarity that doesn't do that. It's one of WD's biggest positives. |

Having one of VERY, VERY few sites to play on with no ads is a blessing and if this game ends up with ads I will quit. As for people saying it would be users adding their adds to their stores etc. - there are people of ages 16+ here. Do you really think that out of all users there won't be a group that will straight up throw in porn ads or sex shops? Or that there won't be bot accounts made specifically for malware ads that bring you to site that downloads something fishy? Because trust me - there will be. There always are the moment there is even a slight chance of getting any kind of data out of people on the internet there is bots, scams and other bullshit. This would pose a huge moderating problem and I don't think I trust any user who is happy about ads/wants them on this site enough to think they are a sensible human being that won't use such feature for stupid things. |

Just popping in here to reply to Khajiit's comment - the idea that people would go rogue and immediately start using it for porn and malware and the mods simply couldn't stop it is extremely funny to me. First of all, have a little faith in the community ahahaha like as far as I know there aren't people behaving poorly on the forums/in the chatboxes like that, and if they do the mods get em pretty fast. But secondly, it's not exactly difficult to set it up so you can only submit 1 link to an image file (like we do with icons, so the odds of embedded malware are next to none), no extra text, and one link that's restricted to internal directing. If people can only link back to wolvden, not add anything extra in or around the link, and use a pre-compressed image, there goes any chances of malware. Then it's not hard to just have someone glance at the images to make sure they're appropriate. I agree that it's another task for the mods/admins to handle, but it's not exactly herculean. |
