For all the shirt and short shorts that were visible behind the mysterious fence of the circus, the air had quickly become cold as day was swallowed up by night. Ringmaster argent rose above her fellow acts. Standing at 6' even without her heels, She was topped mostly by actors on stilts and the tall tents behind her. Her green eyes surveyed the colorful grounds with an air of suspicion and authority. A large clock among the vendors hit ten. The sound reverberated above the howl of voices, and she lowered her gaze to give the cue to open the doors. ((Lotus Castor, 23, He/They, Clown. Bag of Holding pants pockets, currently empty.)) Lotus was aware it was the first circus since the death of the past ringmaster, a man who also bore the title of Ringmaster Argent: Sofia Argent's father. While it might not be obvious to most, there was a slight uncertainty to tonight. Lotus knew he felt it. He also know it probably wouldn't be detected past the warm redness of his cheek, past the upward turned circles drawn on the edges of his mouth. With white gloved hands he opened one of the three gates, bowing down extravagantly low so that his blonde waves bounced over his face. |

Under the cover of night, it was time once again for those gates to be opened. Oh how Zhangzi enjoyed seeing those fresh faces with his dark eyes, full of excitement and curiosity. He was always certain that he could draw in a crowd with his mysterious and handsome aura, long black hair cascading down his tall and slender form like ink. The light of the moon revealed the blue hues, if the night air brought luck then the midnight blue in his eyes would be seen too. ((Mono, 24, They/them, errand runner/jack-of-all trades/assistant, they work behind the scenes and there's nothing particular remarkable about them)) Assisting the clown, the blue and brown eyed individual in opening the gates. Being considered tall it was relevantly easily to glance about. Their soft white and black flicked out in some places and a few small scars littering their body gave them a roguish look. Mono's job didn't demand for them to keep up a certain appearance, they weren't meant to be seen in the spot light after all. |

"Ringmaster Argent," He straightened up in an exaggerated way, waving the motion from his knees to his head. Lotus reached up and honked his red-painted nose playfully, making the honks himself. It was so convenient that this ringmaster title was the same as the last, it would help with slip ups, though it would also remind him a long time of the old ringmaster's untimely death. "Sofia is still ok to you, or perhaps Ringmaster Sofia." Her expression softened. Lotus was like a brother to her. Her family had taken him in on one of their opening nights years ago. An orphaned kid refused to leave, and was subsequently accepted with opened arms. Her voice quieted, her eyes flickering to the nearest carnival member, Mono, to see if they had any privacy. "Listen. I recognize our job is to expect the unexpected, as well as to cause the unexpected. Take care of yourself, Lotus." He watched her, confused, as she removed her velvet glove and disappeared into the fog that was settling into the grounds. She was gone from sight in an unnaturally quick fashion. Lotus sucked in his lips. Hmm. Then, returning to the guests and Mono, regained a toothy grin. "Step right in, folks! Get your popcorn and meet out many talented performers of the Evening Oddities Circus! Explore before it is too late!" |

When the newly appointed Ringmaster came over, their body tensed momentarily. It wasn't out of fright or any negative emotions, Mono felt the small urge to be more attentive towards her due to her loss. They never had a father but they had a close relationship with their mother. She raised them on her own. Mono couldn't hear what the two were talking about and it wouldn't concern them anyways, unless it was an issue that needed to be tended to immediately. They looked back to the moving crowd, any suspicious behaviour and they'd ask a guest to step away for a moment. [ Zhangzi ] The snake charmer was able to easily bring in a crowd around the small spot he'd picked to perform at. Zhangzi didn't play any kind of instrument, a strong gaze and fluid motions would be enough to manipulate the minds of the reptiles and sometimes the people around watching. He wasn't always considered responsible with this skill due to his cruel nature. He'd gladly break a few hearts and bones if allowed, but this place was somewhere he could belong. It'd be a shame to taint the circus's reputation because he wanted to entertain himself. |

Rihan bounced lightly on her bare feet, a happy grin spread across her face. Her mare, coat a gorgeous chestnut, flicked her ears back to the woman. "Soon, cariad." She whispered and the mare turned at the Welsh word, pressing her soft nose to Rihan's pockets, searching for food. Rihan laughed and fished a small snack out of a nearby bucket, holding it out for Carys. "There. Now focus, remember the run! Keep your head about you and keep your strides even." She moved around the mare, checking the pad and making sure the girth was tightened. Unlike how she had trained with her family, Rihan and Carys worked without a certain saddle, made specifically for trick riding. Instead they used a simple pad with 2 girths to hold it in place and stretch it to avoid wrinkles in the rough fabric. There were small hold, bands of metal hidden from the audience's view to help her hang form Carys' side but they were easily concealed with any matter of flowing sleeves. It had caused many accidents without the correct saddle but these people, come to watch their shows, they could be awed by the smallest things. It didn't matter much. Thinking of this, Rihan fixed her costume. It looked like a dress, many folds and flowing fabric but it had a few hidden slits, leaving the rider to move without restriction. A wonderful image they made, the red mare bursting form the mists in the outdoor show-ring, a ghost rider astride. Someday the dogs would be well trained enough to run alongside them, leaping and baying as though they were wolves. Carys dipped her head, tugging at the halter just enough to let Rihan know she was bored. "Oh hush, you can hear the people are here. We just need to wait. And they need to set up the torches. Ooh, wouldn't it be fun if I could bring a torch with? Imagine that Carys, imagine that." Carys imagined it setting fire to the tents and let out a snort of clear displeasure. "So grumpy." Rihan laughed, reaching to scratch at her neck. |

Lotus stepped back and allowed the locals in. Their numbers turned from the few lining the fence to the hoard of moving faces in the back. People of all shapes and sizes entered. Well, there were few young children. The time of night and the rumors of how they got their performers helped that. It was somewhat true, of course. If he were asked by a stray visitor if he ever heard of children getting abducted, what could he say? "Why sir, that was me!" He looked into the grounds. There was a big circle of booths vendors upon entry. They carried sounds of carnival games, of bells, of the sizzling of deep fried foods and chatter. They carried the smells of buttery popcorn and the warmth of funnel cakes and smoke. Past them, still hidden by the mists and darkness of night, were the animal pens, psychic tents, ride operators. Then barely visible from this distance, was the big top. The veil above the three ring circus acts. Ringmaster Argent was probably almost there by now. She knew the mists that seemed to follow them like a fish knew water. "Let's make this place a little easier to navigate, shall we?" Lotus produced a lighter from his voluminous pants and snatched a torch from the edge of the fencing. He carefully lit one without harming his gloves and passed it to Mono. "Have you done this before? Or are you usually security? It's rather fun to put on this act, no matter how small it is." Mono could decline, naturally. The other clowns and vendors would work swiftly regardless. Lotus, however, did consider the torches a huge part of the atmosphere. They gave more light, but casted longer shadows than the large golden Christmas-like bulbs that adorned some tents. |

Rihan peeked through the separating wall, keeping behind the outdoor ring seperate from the crowds. The crowd was going bigger but so far no one had come near the back pens. She should probably light some of the extra torches.... it was rather dark and unless they memorised how it was set up no one would find the area. Hmm. She didn't want to go out in her costume but maybe someone else would come around. Otherwise she'd find something to put on over this and head out herself, either way it would be fine. Carys huffed and she moved back to the horse, checking over the saddle again. Small gaps where she could tuck her feet to hang, the bands were in place, both girths were tight. She moved over to Cary's mane, checking the small decorations where facing out, ready to catch the light as they ran. Carys' tail was unbound and brushed out neatly but Rihan picked up a brush in any case, carefully running it through the hair. |

Taking the torch from the clown, they eyed him suspiciously in a curious way. There had beeb rare occasions where Mono was required to fill in for another performer, but that didn't mean that they knew how to be apart of a show. Sure, they had almost roguishly handsome looks and strength, but they felt a little awkward with expecting eyes on them. Mono worked better wandering the show grounds, helping tying tents down or fixing loose screws on rides. Simple hands on work. "What are you wanting me to do?" Mono asked, ready to carefully follow any instructions given. [ Zhangzi ] The big top could be seen from a distance, almost like a beacon in the night. Zhangzi wasn't apart of the main show, he was a small attraction situated further away from all the noisiness of the crowds. If a guest lost their way, they could lure them back to the main crowd. The few children that had come to the circus were mostly frightened by him, he didn't mind since children weren't his target audience. Children weren't easily distracted by kind words, they wanted to get their little hands on the reptiles he worked with. When there wasn't people around him anymore, he gestured for most of the snakes to sliver on back into their baskets of various sizes. He wanted to see what kind of crowd the circus was drawing in tonight, a black snake hanging loosely around his shoulders like a scarf as he wandered bare foot closer to the more populated areas. |
