Breeding Terminology for Future Reference - A Proposal

Posted 2020-10-16 19:07:36

I will raise my hand sheepishly and say I had the same thought that Kali did - it wasn't entirely clear to me, Siren, that you meant what you explained later that you meant. Now that you've expounded on it I get where you were coming from and I agree with Druid that we're all likely on the same page. Thank you both for helping to clarify the issue in a more detailed fashion.

Kali, lets say we only know of one wolf who is a carrier. We don't know of any others except this one.

By inbreeding with his offspring we know that there is a 1/10 chance the pup is a carrier, so breed enough pups enough times and you are more likely to get mutated pup than breeding that carrier with many unrelated wolves, as the general populous has a less than 1/10 chance of being a carrier!

Kali what they are saying that inbreeding can lead to more possible mutation IF the parents are carriers and produce children then breeding those children back to the parents will result in a better chance of producing a mut only because of how the recessive traits work, Sure inbreeding itself doesn’t make Muts but can lead better chances of receiving that recessives genes rather then breeding those children to another wolf that May or may not have it

But it's not the inbreeding that is (hopefully) producing more carrier pups, it's the carrier gene of the stud.

Make the argument about proven carrier studs versus unproven carrier studs and it's all good. Just leave the inbreeding out of it since it's not a factor.

We have at least four known albinism carriers in the game already.  Those two proven males give a higher chance of carrier pups than unproven carrier studs; no matter if the bred girl is related to them or not.

Edit: I know it makes testing for carriers easier and will produce more muts. That is fine. Just don't conflate those two things; they are not the same.

But kali we all know it’s not a factor but it does lead to being able to test carriers much more easily so idk why you still arguing about it

But if you only have one proven carrier, it does make a difference if you inbreed.

Inbreeding = = a Player driven method

Inbreeding =/= A official WD mechanic

Is the simplest way I mean it?

So yes, Druid is correct.

Edit: Clarity.

''We have at least four known albinism carriers in the game already.  Those two proven males give a higher chance of carrier pups than unproven carrier studs; no matter if the bred girl is related to them or not.''

I don't think anyone was trying to argue against the mechanical aspect of breeding to proven albinos, melanistic etc.

It was, if you have a wolf with a gene and access to no other proven ones, your chances are increased by inbreeding them, than by breeding to other wolves. As that puppy has a 10% chance to also have the gene, the general population of wolves has a much, much lower chance.

(Most players also don't have much, if any access to the already existing muties and some players just want to do the work by themselves or in a group of friends).

Edit: Also, existing muties won't always be studs.

Wait - how are there four known albinism carriers in the game already? Was a second albino produced?

@bonibaru No reason to be sheepish! I just thought I was clear and obviously I was mistaken if more than one person misunderstood me. I suppose when I talk about inbreeding as a method to try to make it more clear in the future.

As far as mutation carriers that I know of we have two proven carriers for albinism and two for melanistic. With one living melanistic stud. At least that is where I am caught up to. So if there was another albino born they do not show up on the search. I know the original doesn't because it didn't live.
