Decrease some Cryptid Quest requirements

Posted 2022-08-25 14:27:39 (edited)
Yes, making battling any cryptid offer up to 5 rep per battle would be a good alternative to allow people to not have to do ANY quests would be a good alternative.

Quest could be a bit of a boost to scales gains, but should not gate players from gaining the rep needed using expensive items in order to get to access shops.

I haven't run into the sacrifice all your Nesting materials yet, but the Healing Salves one is brutal.

This time, a quest wanted a Rich Healing Salve and a Cure for All at the same time.

This is not a friendly quest design. I skipped. Yes, I could have given them, but this is principle now.

The cryptid quests are brutal, and I haven't even gotten the incredibly demanding ones yet. But between tracking down certain enemies and prey, hunting and scouting, and sacrificing good items, it's annoying. I love this event, but I really wish they'd ease up on a majority of the quests now.

"Gathering stuff isn't my strong point, to say the least. You, on the other hand, have at least a few ways to drag stuff around. Bring me 2 x Butterfly Wing, 2 x Rabbit Carcass, 1 x Oregano. It should be easy enough to come across on your travels."

Either I have a bad memory, or butterfly wings can only be obtained during the Lunar Event.
I don't know how players who joined after the last Lunar Event should find them.

Also concerning the Nesting Material quest:
It always asks for six nesting material. One nesting material is 10 items - herbs, other, amusement. Usually fairly valuable items. So 60 items = 6 nesting material, for one quest.
Now multiply that by getting several of these quests per day.
Now multiply that by the fact that this is a month long event. And suddenly, it stops being so funny. It starts coming up to hundreds of items.
Newbies don't have this. Even us more experienced/established players will start hurting.

Lets say I have... 300 Boneset, and I want to use most of that for nesting material. That's 30 nesting materials. Lets assume I get 2 to 5 nesting quests per day. That's anything between 12 to 30 nesting material in a single day.

This is not sustainable.

Absolutely support. These quests were fine and dandy when it was day one but once you factor in it's 24 quests a day and a 31 day event it's not fine.

"Slay/Defeat Specific Enemy quests:"
I want to add that some merged ask me to kill 3x of a specific kinfolk. This is not ok with how rare cryptid encounters are - let alone one specific cryptid three times. This should be bumped down or you get increased odds for that cryptid.

Quests asking for items:I also think ALL quests ask for far too many items - aside from maybe those that ask for carcasses and the ones that ask for a small handful of herbs and feathers. Sure 10× rocks or 5× nesting materials may be alright once but a week into the event and I've seen these quests more times than I care to count. These need to be taken down in number.

Potential Inflow/outflow balancing
Another option that I quite like is trying to balance the inflow/outflow of these items. Add encounter rewards that drop these items - not a single cataclysm encounter drops healing salves or nesting materials. There are a few who drop herbs, amusement items, and cave building materials - which is good.
A long while back we had encounters who would give quest items as their result - they now give nothing. Anyways, It'd be cool to see a cataclysm encounter or two that does this same thing - giving you items that the cryptids are asking for.

Another issue that has come to my attention is, while the enemies will scale to a range around that of the player's lead wolf the stats can still very much go above the lead - making this inconvenient and making battle quests much more geared towards higher level players over new players where their stats are not the greatest.

Here is just one battle from a friend with their starting wolf who was helping me out
lead wolf
Strength 48
Speed 51
Agility 49
Wisdom 51
Smarts 53
Total 252

Enemy
Level 9 glawackus
Starting modifier: low smarts
Enemy lunge: low agility
Latch: low strength
Flee: low speed
After a bit of exploring the data was all the same for every glawackus found. Low, low, low and more low.

Even without low stats and the modifiers working in my favor I find myself getting my ass handed to me by some of the cryptids and often winning by the skin of my teeth - using 1-2 healing salves each fight (on top of the salves the stupid cryptids want!)

Support!

Slay/Defeat quests:
It definitely feels like enemies disappear the second you get a quest for them. How anyone who isn't on frequently finishes these quests in a timely manner is beyond me. These are some of the least frustrating quests to me personally, but they can take so long to complete that sometimes it doesn't feel worth it. Either potential fixes would be sufficient.

Slay/Defeat Specific Enemy quests:
I got a quest that asked me to kill 3 Ocelots. Not only is that so specific to find that it would likely take me hours, but it would have to specifically be an Ocelot. If there was a group or a Lunar version, those wouldn't count. I think it should be species-based. (Kill Felines instead of Ocelots.) And of course Lunar and group enemies should count.

Give specific item quests
There is no logical reason that a quest should ask for 6 Nesting Material or 5 Healing Salves. Yes, there are a lot of these items in-game, but that's after years of seasoned players accumulating them. The new or casual players will suffer the most from these quests. The ones involving rarer items (such as unobtainable carcasses or Rich Healing Salves) simply shouldn't exist. Rich Healing Salves are going for ~1000 SC right now, so to have that plus extra items tacked on? Insane.

(Small note, but GH guide says Butterfly Wings can also be found through a moth encounter in the Desert. So it's found in the Lunar Event and that one single encounter.)

Find specific encounter in Explore quests
I don't know why, but these ones always take forever. It took me ~5 hours to find the encounter for one of these. In that time, I could have blasted out 10 other quests through luck-rolling hunt or general carcass quests instead. Finding these shouldn't be so difficult.

The skip should be reduced from 30. Some players have spent 1000+ SC solely to skip quests, and it hasn't been a week yet. I can understand it being an SC sink, but that's extreme. An interesting way to do it would be a penalizing feature, where it starts at only 0-10, and with each quest skipped, it increases by 10 until it reaches 30. (Resetting at RO.) That way, it gives players some leeway while still discouraging constant skipping. Or it should just be reduced to 10-15.

And/or we should be able to do 2-3 quests at a time. With more options, we have more agency and it's easier to ignore quests we don't like. Edit: Also, the inflow/outflow idea is neat. There's a bit of that at play, but the way it currently is leaves a lot to be desired.

A lot of these quests are confusing at best and I'm trying my best to enjoy them. But it's difficult when every time I start having fun, I'm slapped with an impossible quest like 5 Healing Salves. I'm aware it's not actually impossible, but it's an absurd ask. I fail to see how 5 CS is worth that when a single salve's going for 300 SC. The numbers are inflated in weird ways and I agree that they should be reviewed across the board.

In the first couple of days it was a novelty.  Now its a burn out and no longer fun.

I really looked forward to new bases and apps, but the energy, time and materials needed to gain them makes it feel like a job.  My full time job is less stressful.

I intend to get 1 marking app.  After that I'm done.  This event has left a bad taste, which is a shame because it was exciting in the first few days.  Now I dread even to log in.

I'll continue to collect scales through explore, but the quests, I'm totally done.  Waste of time, effort resources and currency.
