The Broken Silence Lore

Can there be harmony between darkness and light?

BACKSTORY
There once lived one pack in the River Mountains. Their territory stretched from the peak of the tallest mountain where they could taste the clouds down to the lowest stream that bubbled and babbled with the confidence of its towering neighbor. The pack was known for its peaceful ways, following the advice of its famous Silent River, a large river that cut through the highest mountain's valley without a single sound. They liked the silence; no spats, no pestering neighboring packs.

But that was long ago. Now there are two packs that live in the River Mountains. The first is the Broken Ridge, a pack known to be as formidable and harsh as its home. They reside in the River Mountain's highest mountain known as High River. Their camp is a collection of caverns that line along its side beside a raging waterfall. The Broken Ridge Pack remains mostly in the mountain, hunting within it and on the cliffsides. The other pack is called the Silent River Pack, named after their camp settlement by the infamous Silent River. They mainly stick to the river though are better known for their adaptability and easygoing nature. They hunt both in the Silent River but also in the forests that border the High River Mountain.

The only connection between these two packs came in the form of a healer named Kveta. Kveta is considered an honorary member of both packs, allowing her not only to live in both territories but to visit both camps so long as she remains equal in her healing and impartial to their rift.
Kveta has brought a new wolf into the River Mountains Valley. This wolf, Konesans, has an unknown past but a generous and talented spirit. Both packs have begun to whisper about keeping her for themselves...

Roaming Wolves

There is a difference between loners, rogues, and roamers. Loners are wolves who do not have packs, rogues are loners who are considered dangerous, and roamers are neither. The title of roaming is given to wolves who contribute to packs though choose not remain part of it. Some consider roamers to be dangerous, far more dangerous than rogues, as they are treated with trust and acceptance despite their lack of affiliation. Most roamers are herbalists and healers, those who choose not to choose one pack to treat and serve with their remedies and cures. Due to the necessity of herbalists, packs have decreed the following as characteristics of roaming wolves:

they must contribute to pack society by hunting or healing
they cannot stay with the pack for more than a month, unless it is necessary for the pack's survival
they may not get involved in pack politics and decisions
they may not stay within pack territory for longer than eight seasons, otherwise they will be considered as a candidate for joining the pack

With these considerations, the Silent River and Broken Ridge pack have the following roamers in their territory.

KONESANS

A wolf who's past is shrouded in mystery. She met Kveta on her travels and the two became friends. Konesans offers aide to her friend and any packs she visits. She is good at most everything she does, though she seems to be cautious in getting close to the members of either packs...

KVETA

The Healer who offers her services for a price. Though her main focus is keeping both packs in good health, she has quite a barbed tongue and sharp wit. She is Konesans' best friend and closest confidant. Though friendly, there is a darkness in her past she has no desire to share.

AMIHAN

Healer Apprentice. Amihan is a bit more caustic than her mentor, but she puts on her best behavior for her patients. Her main tasks revolve around the making of remedies rather than seeing patients, and that suits this wolf just fine.

NIRAJ

Amihan's brother and all around softie. Niraj is a giant teddy bear, eager to provide comfort and support to his fellow roamers and any other wolves. He is well known for helping with the pups in both packs.

HEKLA

Daughter of Konesans. She was born along with her sister Svea in the Silent River Pack while their mother was visiting there. Both of them were raised as part of the pack, the hope to get them to join. Hekla chose to follow her mother in roaming, though she seems to mostly use this to sunbathe wherever she wants.

SVEA

Daughter of Konesans, raised with her sister in the Silent River pack in hopes they would join them. Svea declined to join the pack, instead finding herself fascinated with the pack in the mountains. She is often seen in Broken Ridge territory to charm her way into their exclusive, secluded camp.

Broken Ridge Pack

"Do not underestimate those who reside in the deep trenches of the cliff's caverns. For those who live in darkness can know more than those who live in light."

The Broken Ridge Pack is known for their sharp eyesight and upside down schedule. They thrive at night rather than in the day, finding the comfort in remaining in their cavern while the sun is in the sky. They excel at hunting in the mountain, moving swiftly with sure paws among the cliffs. The Broken Ridge Pack is considered more isolated than the Silent River Pack, as they rarely come down from their mountain territory. Wolves in the pack are usually quiet by nature, not overly friendly nor aggressive. They are led by their alpha Sargon, a true aloof leader who would rather keep the pack in isolation. Below are some key facts to know about this pack:

Pups are priority. All are responsible for their well-being.
Members are responsible for themselves in the territory if they are alone.
Silent River pack members are not allowed in Broken Ridge territory.
Members are a little adverse to sunlight due to their long history of living in deep mountainous caverns.

SARGON

The aloof and stoic leader of the Broken Ridge Pack. He believes in teaching independence and confidence, as the mountains are dangerous and thus who explore alone are foolish or brave depending on their results. He is firm in keeping his pack safe, even if it is means isolation.

ECHO

The lovable and friendly Second of the Broken Ridge pack. She is easy to talk to and very supportive to her pack members. Her main concern is watching over pups in the pack, though she is eager to find a helper. Even this caring wolf has secrets of her own...

RHU

The sheltered and treasured mate of Sargon. Her dark golden fur is considered drops of sunlight, making her the heart of the pack that lives in darkness. It helps that her ancestors have been around since the pack's beginning. She may be sheltered, but there is more to this wolf than meets the eye...

NUNE

The best hunter in the pack and controls most of the hunts. She is loyal and observant, always aware of others and their current moods to ensure perfect harmony in hunting parties. But perhaps she is observant for a different reason...

Silent River Pack

"Those who wander in the shadows know the benefits of light and darkness. Life is always changing and flowing like the river. Let the waters cleanse your claws."

The Silent River Pack is known for their stealth and laidback nature. They thrive in the daylight, using their territory's canopy as a means of camouflage and refuge. They excel at hunting in forest terrain because of this, but they are best known for their skills in fishing from the river they are named for. The Silent River is considered to be more friendly and diplomatic than their mountain neighbors, as they thrive with going with the flow. Wolves in the pack are usually energetic or friendly by nature, not overly aggressive or aloof. They are led by their alpha Nabia, a true diplomat who loves to engage in debates and seeks others to join her pack relentlessly. Below are some key facts to know about this pack:

Pups are priority. All are responsible for their well-being.
Members are never on their own for there are many pebbles in the river.
Broken Ridge pack members are not allowed in Silent River territory.
New members and pack adolescents undergo a river ceremony in order to be truly accepted in the pack.

Though her strength relies on her tongue rather than her claws, she is a fearsome opponent when it comes to her pack's way of life. She enjoys the current flow of the river and will do anything to prevent a shift in the water.

KOYR

The serious Second of the Silent River. Koyr helped in raising Svea and Hekla. She was disappointed to learn neither of them wished to stay in the pack. Her hope is to change their minds.
