Deaf Wolves Should Have Any Role

Posted 2022-11-09 10:06:37
Support, for all the reasons already stated. I just had a pup born with Spontaneous Blindness, don't know why he should be relegated to merely taking up space in the den. If he remains barred from formal roles, he'll become a Sentry safeguarding his pack using all of his other senses.

Support.

As well as Deaf wolves having more roles, I think Blind and Cataract wolves should also be able to have a role at all.

I understand both sides of this. It can be more difficult for deaf wolves to hunt, since other wolves won't be able to vocally give calls on different things, like if they hear a opponent or something like that. I also agree that they should have the opportunity to hunt, because I feel like they would be amazing stalkers as long as they are focused! I get the herbalist thing, but it is also strange that they can be scouts since wouldn't some events in the world require hearing in order to be avoided? Any way. I support them having more detailed coding, so that they are able to do most/any of the available roles but also have different challenges or effects depending on what they do! This could be a really cool wolf type in the future if the game coders were to detail this!

Oppose. Wolves have more to lose sending a deaf packmember to hunt than humans do. if they're going to be able to perform any and all roles, they need to have penalties. They have a disability, and as they don't have the resources to make useful things like humans (hearing aides, laser eye surgery) they can't perform as well.

Deaf hunters won't be able to hear how much sound they make or commands/warnings given by teammates. Deaf scouts can work, but they'd need to be especially vigilant with their eyes and nose and perhaps have a longer scout time. Deaf pupsitters can't hear a call of danger nor hear if a puppy is hurt or needs help.
Similarly, a blind packmate cannot hunt. Perhaps enhanced sense of smell could be useful in tracking, but it couldn't keep watch for danger in front of it, such as a log it may trip over scratchy bushes. The other wolves could warn it, but that would make unnecessary noise. It can't keep an eye on pups either. Sure, it could hear them, possibly better than other wolves... But it's way too easy for pups to sneak off quietly while other pups are making loud noises as pups do. I definitely would NOT trust a blind herbalist... They could use their nose, yes, but are you going to trust a blind pharmacist to blend the correct amount for medicine? What about a blind surgeon?

Blind people can be pharmacists? Sorry but people have adaptations when they're blind which include things like screen readers and to say you wouldn't trust any blind person to do their job? I don't know what to say to that at all. I'm sat here wondering how to explain how bad that was without offending you or getting myself banned.

Some human jobs require good eyesight, many do not. In this case it's irrelevant because there is, in-game, a bear who corrects your 100% proficient herbalists guesses sometimes, implying that said bear is always watching over your wolves actions. Even for humans, if society and the people around you are decent and will accommodate your different needs, being disabled doesn't mean you have to sit home all day doing nothing.

I agree with @VagueShapes.

Being disabled does NOT stop you from doing everyday tasks. My brother is disabled, has had plenty of setbacks. But that does not and will not stop him from being who he is and doing the things he likes. In my opinion, the deaf and blind wolves should be able to have roles but with limitations. Deaf and blind people have multiple ways to get around in a nondisabled world. Being disabled HAS limitations, but it does NOT stop them from living. The creators should fix this.

This ^ ^^
I agree with VagueShapes as well.

Sorry Sunny but what you said and how you said it was kinda.... offensive and a bit hurtful esp for those who May have a disability who play WD.
Plus we're talking about pixel animals. Not humans and such. Even with a real animal. Nature finds a way sometimes ^ ^;

Setbacks are fine and understandable but flat out saying no isn't very kind.

It wasn't my intention to be offensive, I'm sorry. What I said wasn't thoughtful nor considerate. Do you want me to remove my comment?

You've already apologised, so no need. It would be good to leave it up there for context I think. Thank you for listening to us.
I feel very strongly that it's so important for both abled and disabled people to know that losing your sight, hearing, mobility, etc isn't the end of the world.
