Community Update #66

Maybe for the nesting pose, yes to showing things like scars and body extensions, but no to things like external decor? Lore-wise it would make sense for wolves to take off their attire to rest, but they can't take off things like that.

Oh I thought it meant new decors just for that, but it looks like it's talking about refitting existing stuff? More support, but that's still a lot of work on the artists

I voted either way on nesting pose.

Most of the decors I use are Custom Decors, so they won't be compatible if the artist doesn't draw a new version of it. That being said, I 100% think artists should be allowed to update their decors for nesting pose, as well as make custom decors exclusively for nesting pose.

With official decors, it would be cool to see some decors on these wolves, since most custom decors won't transfer over. There are some decors that would already work - background decors and framing type decors. Between cataclysms, lunar, and halloween, we have quite a few of them. It wouldn't take any art edits to do these, though it would take some file editting. If we don't do any decors, it would suck to lose all these decors that would have worked anyway.

But I also understand it would be so much work to do all current decors and decors in the future.

I understand lioden has decors disabled for pregnant lions. That being said, Lioden also has a LOT more variants than wolvden - 13 regular, 7 dwarf, 4 (at least?) unique primal poses, 12 hybrid poses, and 6 lethal mutations. These are just the major ones. I didn't count ones that were minor edits like missing tail/eyes/claws/etc or just color edits like alb/mela/piebald. That's at least 44 unique variants for each item added to the game. Even though you might not have to redraw for every single stage, editing, file naming, and uploading will happen for each.

At the moment, wolvden has 11 unique variants (with 1 previewed for the future). This is a lot less than lioden, so it might be okay to add decor to the nesting pose. It feels no different than the game adding a new lethal mutation or pose to the game. It would take some extra time to catch up the items, but then it should be a bit easier. Each new decor can be added in advance as a slower workload. It would likely delay the release of the nesting pose, but it's not a feature anyone's dying to get.

A final option is to have nesting only decor. This might be a shot in the dark, but since some decors already work with nesting, it would be a shame to lose them if they went with no decors added. I'd still love to add visual effects like darkness, lunar spores, etc even if I can't use decor. These enhance the backgrounds and environment more than anything. So you could have an option in the item wardrobe

Nesting Compatible: No (Or Yes)

Then with time some items could be added and switched to yes slowly. No promise that everything would be added, but the easier decors could be. Like birds, rocks, trees, and stuff I mentioned before. Heck, this could even allow some nesting pose exclusive decors!

"It feels no different than the game adding a new lethal mutation or pose to the game."

Honestly I wish the game did add a new pose (something like sentinel or relaxed, that will be with the wolf for their entire life) instead of spending so much time doing art for a nesting pose that's going to be active only a handful of hours or days in a female wolf's life (if they're a breeder, which not every wolf is).

That's fair. Out of all my musings, I do feel the best idea is to still make some decors work with nesting and some not. I just wouldn't want all the already compatible decors to be wasted.

Yeah it could work similarly to custom decor, where some decors are Universal (i.e. with any pose) and some are pose-specific.

Okay I've come back with some math. I've gone through every decor in the game (not custom decor) and have made a helpful little pie chart to give people a better idea of how much work it would take to do all the new decors on nesting pose.

Blue Slice - Decors that Need to be Redrawn (212 Decors): These were any decors that fit formly to the wolf (jewelry, claws, wings, manes, stuff like that). It depends on the pose, but these would likely need to all be redrawn for the nesting pose. It's a smaller chunk than I thought it would be, but depending on the size of the artist team and their efficiency, might still take a good bit of time. Some may not have to be redrawn depending on the pose. This is just an estimate.

Yellow Slice - Plant / Rock / Branch Decors (84 Decors): These don't seem to change depending on the pose / age of wolf, so they would be little work to port over. No redrawing, just naming and organization.

Green Slice - Environmental / Effect Decors (106 Decors): These also don't change depending on the pose. These include things like lunar effects, the halloween decors, swept seeds, confetti, snow, weather, rain, and background items like landslide, flooding grounds, and other decors from the cryptid event. Again these would just be naming and organization.

Red Slice - Other Items that Won't Need to be redrawn (148 Decors): These include other decors that won't need to redrawn, mostly animals: birds, bugs, foxes, lunar companions, black friday wolf decors, coigreach animals. These won't need to be redrawn, but may need to be adjusted around the page depending on the pose. Either moved or flipped horizontally.

So overall, about 65% of the decors could be easily tranferred to nesting pose without having to be redrawn. That's a lot of decors to be lost that would already work. It would be easy to make the others "non nesting compatible". Or if the artists were willing, redraw the remaining decors.
