"Hmph," Lark sniffed, disappearing into one of the caves. "Whatever you say, then, your majesty." |

King sighed and rolled his eyes. He loved his sister but he wished she would lay off him for awhile. He reentered his cave and picked up the bone of an elk. He plopped back down and started to gnaw words into the bone He gnawed the story of his battle with his father for the throne at the age of one. He stopped gnawing and recalled the memory of that day. I must challenge father. King had thought desprately. Lark is growing stronger everyday. If I am ever to be Alpha I must challenge him before she does. I may be young, but father grows weaker and weaker everyday. I can win. King was fighting for his life in the royal arena. He was sweating and trying to dodge his father's powerful blows. His sister was screaming at him from the top of a rock. His father was advancing, ready to kill his only son. I WILL DO THIS! The thought exploded in Kingsley's mind. He charged forward and leaped over his dad. Then he rolled under him and tore his belly open. His father staggered and gave King enough time to tackle him and rip open his dad's throat. King winced and tried to forget that day. He went back to his gnawing. |

Lark curled up in the corner of the cave, her head resting on her paws. She let out a small sigh, thinking back to the day everything changed. "No, Kingsley, I can't let you do this," Lark sobbed, clutching at her little brother as he got ready for the battle. "You can't— I don't want to watch you—" "You don't want to lose the throne?" Her brother interrupted. "You want me to always stay the weakling, the second-in-command, the one that doesn't actually mean anything?" "Wha— Kingsley, you know that being alpha isn't—" "No, Lark. You can't stop me. And I'm totally going to win," he said, then shot a grin at her. "Cheer for me." With that, he stepped out of the cave and into the light, where the battle of his life was waiting for him. Lark staggered as she followed, taking a seat next to her father and trying her best to stand proud and strong like she was taught to. "I'm going to watch my brother die, oh shit, no…" she whispered out loud. Her father glanced at her. "Don't think I want to do this," he growled, standing up. "But Kingsley challenged me, and I must accept the challenge." Lark glanced away, but fixed her eyes on Kingsley, not wanting to see, but also unable to look away. Moments later, Lark's whole world was flipped upside down. Her father was dead. And blood dripped from her brother lips. Lark coughed in the silent cave, digging her claws into her paw until the painful memories were washed away. She was glad he'd won, she really was. She would never in a million years wish death upon her little brother. But all that she'd trained her whole life to do was now… useless. She could use some of her skills as a scout, sure, but the leadership training she'd received her whole life was just… wasted. Was there even any point to her existence now that she wasn't the special one? The one in charge? Now that she was just… a failure? Lark sighed again, another breath of air leaving her as she stood up and left to go scout. A failed alpha. What a lovely title, she thought sarcastically. (( wooo that was long )) |
