Yellowstone's nomadic Wolf Pack - Tracked & documented every 2 weeks.

1/19/2021

--Wolf Number 1 ("Esme") was tracked to the edge of the Druid Pack's territory today, about a mile away from one of the pack's hunting parties. She laid in the snow until nightfall, where she died under the snowfall. She was the first wolf of this pack to be released, and she died at an impressive almost 8 years of age.

--Number 12 gave birth to her litter today. There seems to be at least three or four pups.

--Number 11, "Rafiki", has given birth to 5 pups.

--Number 21, dubbed "Skye" has begun to leave the den site and travel with the rest of the pack - she was darted, documented, and collared for the first time early this morning.

--In addition to Number 21, 3 other pups from the same litter also moved out of the den. The runt, however, looked sickly; we were unable to locate these three pups.

--Number 8, the alpha male, was documented in a skirmish at the border with another male wolf. Number 8 returned with only a few small injuries. Efforts to locate the smaller male were unsuccessful.

--The alpha female, Number 15, attempted to give birth this morning - she had 3 pups in total, but two were in poor health and died shortly after birth.

--Several wolves seem to be showing symptoms of illness - close monitoring will continue within the coming days.

--Number 8, the alpha male, has left the park several times within the last few days; today he returned with a small doe for the pack. He seems to have wounds from a possible battle with a rival pack, but nonetheless seems healthy.

--The end of winter has brought a high pup mortality rate; higher than last winter's.
