Moonless nights
Song of the Week You should see me in a crown by Billie Eilish
The Moonless Nights pack had prospered under Mountain's iron rule for many seasons. His distinctive white, red and green fur commanded respect and fear in equal measure from his subjects. But Celeste, a brave brown and black she-wolf, saw the truth behind the alpha's harsh dominion.
While Mountain basked in the spoils of leadership, the rest of the pack toiled endlessly to provide for him. He rewarded loyalty with scraps and punished even the slightest insolence with vicious beat-downs. Celeste's paws still bore the scars from the last time she dared question the alpha's ruthless ways.
As the seasons hardened into bitter winters, the pack grew leaner while Mountain's bulky frame swelled. Celeste knew if they survived another harsh cold under his rule, it might be their last. She began rallying a tight circle of supporters, making contingencies in secret for a daring coup.
On a moonless night when gale winds drowned out all other noise, Celeste and her rebels struck. They descended on Mountain's elite guard with the ferocity of a wolf pack untamed. Celeste's jaws clamped down on the alpha's leg, toppling the brute as her allies swarmed.
Mountain fought with the savagery that had made him alpha, his claws flashing like crimson knives in the darkness. But Celeste's endless determination and the weight of rising pack support overwhelmed even his monstrous strength.
By dawn's first light, Mountain laid broken and bloodied, glaring at Celeste's victorious rebels through a smashed eye socket. In a ragged voice, he threatened a violent reprisal if she dared take his title.
But Celeste had no more fear of monsters. "You've taken your last life in the Moonless Nights," she answered, nodding to her most merciless soldier. With one savage bite, Mountain's bloodstained reign was permanently ended. Celeste felt she was too old to rule the pack, so she left the pack to Malawi, a she-wolf who's family was killed by Mountain and was raised by Celeste.
