*editing- now a basic description
"Why did my wolf from you come with a feather?"
Usually when a wolf of importance or sentimental value leaves via trade, they take a feather with them. The leader hand picks the feather from his or hers stash and gives it to the wolf personally to show that they are indeed upset they're leaving but wish them well. The idea is this feather will allow the leaving wolf to use their new wings of freedom to soar to new heights, better opportunities, and a wealthy future.
⊰ We knew the risks. The journey to and through The Ridge is dangerous, more so in this storm, and even worse with puppies. Rhyolite begged to return to the river we passed, but I knew we couldn't. This monsoon was rumored to be the worst storm our region has seen in many moons..
The Ridge is a mountainous rise that stretches for eternity. One side buffers the Great Plateau, the other hides the Coastal Plain. Between the two set miles of deep valley, winding rivers, sheer cliff.. Wonderful terrain for traveling in the rain. We had no choice though, rival packs against two lone wolves and their pups. The odds weren't that great.
My ancestors came from The Ridge, more specifically the Northern Pass, but had migrated south towards Mist Valley as time went on. Rhyolite suggested we head for the coast instead of the mountains, I suggested we head for my home lands, yet neither of us wanted to leave anyhow. Precious time was wasted and the pups were born, leaving us even more vulnerable to the packs. We left two days after, just before the storm passed the mountains and tore down on us..
↠ How did you manage? That storm wiped out several territories..
⊰ Ember.
↠ Ember?
⊰ Ember. The storm rolled in earlier than what the crows said, hitting just as dusk fell. Ice rained from the skies, the pups were thankfully small enough to be covered but Rhyolite suffered trying to shield the three of us. She-
⍚ Followed the scent of worn out parents and lost hope.
⊰ You could put it that way, yes.. She found us in the middle of it all. Of course, being wary of unwelcoming pack members, Rhyolite tried to fight her off.
⍚ He was barely a scrap at that point, all bark no punch. I almost felt sorry for him.. It wasn't until I realized Asimí was guarding pups that he wasn't a rogue looking to boost his ego. After scrabbling around for awhile, he gave up and sat beside Asimí, beat but still trying to put himself between me and her.. I believe it dawned on the three of us that no one was going to survive alone if the storm howled on. Asimí had gotten up to face me, explaining the situation since her battered companion couldn't. We agreed on a truce and allowed them to stay in the cavern with me. It was plenty big enough for us, sheltered between two boulders that were scarred by the claws of ancient dire..
⊰ The storm had died off days later but we remained. Ember suggested we talk while Rhyolite occupied the pups and from there a new friendship began. Others soon showed up, some thinking they can break our defenses, others looking for refuge. Ember noted the humans often speaking about an old stone formation built by ancient creatures, they forged rock into hard covers for protection with the fire that burned inside. We decided our little ramshackle pack needed a name, we chose Knoxforge partially because of the ruins. Forged from the hillside flames, legends rose from it's ashes and began a new era..
⟢ You're forgetting someone important, someone who saved your pelt, multiple times. In the same week. Actually multiple pelts in the same-
⊰ And the great o'mighty herbalist, Onyx, who so graciously cured us from our illness and wounds. Where would we be without her magnificent and glorious self? We owe her all the thanks, then some.
⟢ .. I don't think I like your tone.
*Will continue when Asimí passes. *sniffle*
⊰ I've come to realize, age is not as friendly as they make it out to be. These bones won't last much longer I'm afraid.. The pack is strong, I've been fortunate to lead such a worthy one, lie with powerful den mates, and share stories with our new generation, but the pack cannot be one without an alpha.
My daughters, Zinnia and Bluebelle, hold such responsibilities as lead hunters, but they have no interest in taking this painstaking place. Their father showed them the darkside of this role. I wish they knew the better of him, but he's long gone now. Thankfully. Ember always had a feeling about him, the old furball.. If her and Onyx could see this place now. (Asimí lets out a soft chuckle.)
"Τα λέμε το σούρουπο, my friends."
My hopes were dwindling like the flame in those old kiln. My heir, my blood, did not want to carry the legacy. The history of this place is about as mysterious as who came first, the mockingbird or the egg, and I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it. Long before my ancestors came to these outcrop, ancient dire staked their claim in the cliffside. They carved history into the stones, their encounters with mini horses, sightings of strange monsters with huge heads and claws, then mountain lions bigger than me.. But the forges, I believe, were not theirs. Wolves don't have the ability to grasp objects, it's an age old problem everyone cannot forget. How could they have used the flame to burn metals? Ember made bits and pieces up for the pups, but in reality she was just as confused as I was. Zinnia has debated many times on how it may have been possible, and even being the jabber jaw she is, had to start at root one each time. And Bluebelle, as head strong as she is, even gave some opinions on it. Seems everyone has now accepted that whatever past is here is just another shrouded life. A story without meaning. Another mountain on the Ridge.. Would my ancestors be upset if one of their own didn't take my place? Were we meant to come back here? My mother always said you'd know when it was right.. But if you don't know what that feeling is, how do you know? Why did they leave in the first place? Why should I fight over a place I barely remember?
⊰ Anger. I wonder if anger drove them to use the forge, to leave the Ridge, to flee.
These thoughts are too complex for an elder like me.. Obsidian would have my pelt if she knew I was up here anyhow. I could slip and fall, breaking my fragile elder bones she would say. Hardly.. I'm no older than seven now. I can't help and laugh whenever she starts sounding like her mother. Oh well. It's getting cold, best I leave before she does come looking. Or maybe she sent Genesis, her scent is fresh..
↠ "Asimí! You old croon, no one knew where you went. Zinnia is wearing a hole beside the entrance just pacing."
⊰ Speak of the unusual mutt. "Must've slipped my mind. I am old you know.. She'll be fine. Her nose works fine, she'd scent something miles before it even managed to cross the foothills."
↠ " Certainly. But she worries-"
⊰ "She should worry less. It not good for an aging Canine such as herself. Her litter needs her to stay calm, wouldn't want my grandpups starving now.."
↠ "Oh Asimí.. Stop giving her reasons. We're all stressed over things, none of us are immortal you know. Maybe one of them will change their mind, or maybe one of the pups will rebel."
⊰ "I can't help but think you're unsure of your own words, Genesis."
↠ " It.. It's a hard decision. Other here packs are taken over or choose among the others, blood doesn't usually take-"
⊰ "My mother's pack was led by her mother. Before then was her grandfather. For ten generations.. Genesis I may not remember my pack but I can tell you my blood is buried in these hills. It runs below the north creek, inside of every tree.. Zinnia knows this, which is why her words have hurt me the most." Zinnia knew the stories. An old wolf named Hickory knew of my mother, she spoke to Zinnia while she was scouting the far south, telling her about the history I couldn't remember well. Zinnia went back a few weeks later to find her again, but Hickory's scent was cold stale by then. I wish she had followed her here..
↠ "... Rhyolite left an impression."
⊰ " I know. " Oh my heart.. After everything I've done for the criminal. After everything Knoxforge has done for him. He had the nerve to try and fight me over this, over the pack's life. I knew alpha was a hard role, we agreed I would lead for the sake of honor, but after the thoughts of power and grief got to his thick skull-
⌅ / ⎒ "ASIMIÍ."
⊰ Hm. Such a warm welcome for someone who was supposedly missing.
⎒ "WHAT did you think you were doing? It's been HOURS! You've been gone since DAWN! Where were you?!"
⊰ "Aw, how very unselfish of you, Obsidian. You sound like you were worried. " (Asimí gives Obsidian a sly look as both Zinnia and Obsidian glare on.)
⎒ "Oh I could care less, but I told mother I'd take care of your dumb butt. You're causing Zinnia to shed."
⌅ " It's not that bad Obsidian.. I just.."
⊰ "I'm sorry." She seemed worried, maybe it was a bad idea to leave for so long..
⊰ "I shouldn't do that to you. Your sister's skull is about as thick as her fur, but you've always had the bigger heart, Zinnia. My dear.. " (Asimí gives Zinnia an apologetic nudge to the shoulder, pressing her muzzle against her cheek for a moment.)
⌅ " .. The pups wanted you to tell them the story again. They're with Ghost right now."
⊰ "The poor thing. I know Melody's passing hurt him, it hurt us all, but I'm grateful for him continuing to watch over the litters." Ghost was one of the first males to come to Knoxforge. He had fought off several invading packs when Melody was brought into the herbal branch. Something opened up his stone cold heart that night. Melody always had the upperhand on him, but she never abused that. A great den mother, and even better friend, but she was always the best mate for Ghost. He's seen over many great den parents, even more healthy litters, but Melody was his one and only.
I guess Rhyolite was mine. Or I thought he was.
⊰ All of this is irritating to think about but I can't shake this one scent that's been bugging me all day.. It's hard to processes thoughts when the wind is blaring at the face. Why was this different than other wolves? One. Just one wolf. A young loner, freshly healed wounds.. Coming closer?
⌅ "You scent it too, don't you."
⊰"He's been wandering all day. The winds aren't that strong.. Where's Bluebelle and Hestia?"
⌅ "Hunting the east, they wouldn't have crossed paths. What if it's another scout?"
⊰"Never mind the packs, I don't think he has one." No, he doesn't I'm sure of it. His scent is wild, untouched by the signature of other wolves, tainted by the forest and nothing more.
↠"Don't leave, I'll look."
⊰"No. Thank you, Genesis, but this is my duty." Had Genesis been my heir she would've taken the role, but we both know she's too old to endure much more. This new generation has some claws to fill.. (Obsidian blocks Asimí from leaving.)
⎒ "Both of you go and I'll trail. I'm not dealing with another landslide incident. "
⊰She's such a stubborn pup! Onyx would be proud of her clone, but I'd wring myself if there were two of them. She's not moving either way.
⊰"Keep quiet then. Alpha's business." According to both their faces, I'm being annoying. (Zinnia gives a tired look to Obsidian before they leave.)

During the lesson: Today, Accokeek convinced some ospreys to chase Pupper- Umber #4 out in the open plains. The real, physical threat of the talons really motivated little paws to do their best.
