Half-Lights

In the forgotten depths of a cratering mineshaft, a scattered pack of wolves could be found stitching a haphazard way of life together amongst darkened tunnels and rotting posts. Living deep enough that one could feel their ears pop as they journeyed, light became more a phenomenon than common occurance. Camaraderie and growth were stunted because of it.

Of course, there were empty laterns strewn about here and there- even if one understood the mechanisms of it, however, such contraptions were man-made; and not to be touched.

One morning, a gold-flecked wolf stalked out of the dawn and into the quarry. What experience she lacked in age, she seemed to make up for in sureness of foot. Without hesitation, the newcomer approached the first shattered lantern she saw, and gently touched her nose to its glass. Instantly, a wave of gas-lit brightness washed over the gloom of the caves. Possibilities, formerly inachievable, had suddenly been placed within reach.

The newcomer had no name- none that she answered to, apparently. The other wolves, brought together in the wake of such a feat, decide to call her Lantern.

And they would be her Half-Lights.
