Tumbleweed Pack
It has been nearly two generations since the disappearance of the heavy walkers. Turned feral, the heavy walkers hunted the pack with their brittle claws and blunt teeth. What they lacked in physical weapon, they made up for in numbers. Stragglers turned to packs numbering in the hundreds, and Tumbleweed Pack almost met it's demise in the foothills of the rockies.
The last pack member, Weston, took to the heights of the rocky mountains to escape the majority of the hordes. With the onset of a brutal early winter did Weston discover the saving grace that was the the first frost. The feral heavy walkers froze, immobilized until the first melt of spring. Most invaluably, with the frost came the Tumbleweed Pack's first healer; Roman. The pack would grow disjointedly through the next few seasons as lone wolves made their way to the last safe haven known. Mortality was high, and wolves frequently deserted the pack due to the harsh life the mountains brought.
One in five puppies survived. What was once a booming time of birth in the spring became a death sentence. The cries of the pups would draw the feral heavy walkers right to the dens. There was not enough wolves to guard the mothers, and the mothers were too valuable to be lost to trying to protect their pups. Thus, under Weston's reign the pups were born after the first frost. What pups that did live were stunted, weak in contrast to their parents. But what they lacked in size and strength proved highly beneficial when it came to hunting the creatures that had turned underground to survive the feral heavy walker onslaught.
The founding leader would lose his life to an albino monstrosity that went by the name Aziraphale. He thrived in the long winter months due to his unique coat, and his size proved essential to bringing freedom back to the pack. Before, the pack simply dealt with what heavy walkers managed to reach their remote locations in the mountains by separating their heads from their necks while they remained frozen. In this way were they able to have an easier spring. Nevertheless, the heavy walkers would resume their numbers by midsummer.
Aziraphale viewed the smaller pack members as a profitable investment to his larger pack. He treated them as expendable. They would lead in the feral heavy walkers, and the larger pack members would pounce on them, bringing them to the earth so that they could destroy the back of the creatures necks, rendering them dead. It was not until Sherbetta, one of the Tumbleweed Pack members, did the original members start to retain their position in the pack. He discovered that their howls disoriented the feral heavy walkers, making them twist and turn, crashing through the trees, unable to focus in on one single target. Suddenly they were no longer bait, instead they became essential.
Even after Aziraphale's passing did the same method continue. Quail Egg, and his son Catboy, continued the standard. Their pack flourished, their members were able to raise pups any time of the year. Prey began to return to the woods.
Until Moonbunny got the idea to press into the homes of the heavy walkers. Something that even their ancestors treated as a death sentence. The heir of the pack, she knew the fine arts of hunting feral heavy walkers. But the numbers were dwindling, and she knew that her family was growing too secure in its placement. She wanted to push forward. Her idea to enter the home territory of the home walkers was met with derision, punishment, and fear. Her father, Catboy, told her that if she thought it was such a brilliant idea, she could head the mission herself. If, and only if, she survived his inevitable death back home, would she be allowed to return and become the pack leader.
A death sentence, she left with her sister and a handful of young wolves who believed in her. They would have to form their own hunting party, their own scouts. The only thing they must do without is a healer; the original healer refused to go with them, and her apprentice too inexperienced to join. They are truly on their own.
