Mauka
Adjective • Hawaiian
Towards the mountains
Perhaps setting on a new journey without making sure you knew your way around these new lands hadn't been such a smart idea. Your mouth felt like cotton, long tongue sticking to the roof of your mouth and even though it dangled out with heavy pants, it wasn't enough to cool your body down. At that point you were growing desperate, eyebrows furrowed as you strained your eyes hoping to catch a glimpse of a lake, puddle or even darkening clouds in the distance that could mean rain.
For a second, you thought that this might be the end for you. You pondered about how great your life had been, flashes of you as a puppy ran through your vision, your mother giving you a delightful elk- wait... your left ear twitched picking up a sound you thought you'd never hear again. Could it be...? Renewed with a dash of hope your nose perked up on the air as your ears tried to capture the sound once again; your body begged for you to give it a rest but with newly found determination you pushed through! It paid off because soon you laid your eyes upon a calm stream that washed through; the crystalline water almost too inviting and without thinking twice you jump inside of this river, lapping up at the cold liquid and allowing it to calm your nerves.
"Enjoying yourself?"
The voice came out of nowhere, and you let out a squeal, startled. Eyes settled on a bird that sat by the shore. Its big, beady eyes focused on you, such booming voice for such a small creature.
"Who are you?" You ask, dragging yourself out of the body of water and giving your fur a shake. It's strange, though, because you swore you saw glittery particles falling from your body. Huh.
"It matters not. Come with me."
Hesitantly you decided to follow the birdie.
"You've ventured into the mountains, my child. Treacherous ways await for you, but worry not, for there is a rumour of a pack that lives around here; and they are quite gentle to outsiders. They call themselves Mauka, a pack created out of nothingness and perseverance; but I wouldn't be too hopeful about encountering them if I were you. They have cut off contact from the others and live secluded, almost as if they were spirits from the very forest we walk on. However." He abruptly stopped, causing you to almost topple over. "If you're brave enough, why not seek them out? They might have something interesting to say."
You wanted to ask more, but the bird took flight in front of you before you could even utter a "hey!". Your nose quickly picked up on the scent of a feast and you laid your eyes upon a clearing filled with fresh kill and a comfortable shelter.
Maybe you should stay for a while.
