ALPHA
The Alphas are the supreme leaders of the pack. Their word is irrevocably law. They are the parents, grandparents, and relatives of everyone in the pack. The only exception is when a wolf comes in through being mates with someone in the pack. There are usually two Alphas, Alpha Male and Female, but these are purely name titles. Wolves with Alpha status are known formally as "Great (Relation to Alpha)", like Great Mother, Great Aunt, Great Grandmother-by-Mate, etc. Most may, however, simply use the wolves' prenomen, their main two-word name. The Alpha Male and Female are of equal standing in the pack, but usually, the one with the dynastic link has the most power. There is no set-in-stone next Alpha when the current one dies. Most Alphas choose their successor from their pool of relatives younger than them, but others may require a battle between two prospecting Alphas, where the one who loses is cast out, or worse. Other Alphas may have a far more kind "trial" of skills between wolves. Others wait until their death, and have the pack vote postmortem for who should be Alpha. Whatever it is, the Alphas are responsible for everyone in the pack, young, old, meek, and mild.

BETA
The Betas, whatever the name may suggest, are not the second-in-commands to the Alphas. In fact, the highest possible power they have is advising the Alpha, and even then they cannot sway any vote or opinion.
