Legend tells that long ago, dragons dominated the realm. These beasts, varying in both size and species, staked their claims in the skies, the oceans, and everywhere in between. They were strong, powerful, and widely respected by the primitive humankind at the time. Coexisting peacefully across the land, some went as far as to worship the dragon of all dragons, the one they believed to have brought them all into existence, a wyvern titled Heigar.
She was massive and was believed to be the largest and the most powerful draconic ever in existence, but also the eldest, with those telling others that Heigar was upwards of tens of thousands years old. It was told that, during her many years alive, she breathed life into nature, incarnate as dragons, blessing her seven children with the gift of the elements: light, shadow, water, ice, fire, earth, and air. When any of these seven siblings fought or disagreed, humankind paid the price with storms, poor weather conditions, natural disasters, and harvests that were less than ideal.
Balance and harmony are, in some cases, only temporary. After thousands of years, the dragons of light and shadow clashed for the final time. Water and fire sided with light, believing that it was needed in equal parts for life to thrive, while ice and air agreed strongly with shadow that a world veiled in darkness would make for a better existence. Earth was their mediator, but died trying to get both sides to see.
Their battle lasted for half a decade, resulting in apocalyptic tragedies. Many innocent lives were lost, and humankind was nearly wiped into extinction. Heigar made her attempts to intervene but they were thwarted, her children too strong and herself too old. Her heart ached for those roped into this war her children had waged on each other, so she took to the skies and snuffed out her lifeforce with a spell that would bring all dragonkind with her into the next life.
Heigar's soul departed but her vessel plummeted, crashing with such immense force onto lush plains that the impact created a vast valley surrounded by steep mountain ranges. She wasn't the only dragon to fall, however. The realm is dotted with dragon burial mounds, long now having been covered by verdant grass. The sudden extinction of the dragons and their absence within the realm has brought sadness to humankind, but their apocalypse as a result of the fighting siblings had ended just as suddenly, too.
The valley created by the elder wyvern has been deemed Heigar's Rest. It is teeming with life and a magical force that can be felt as travelers pass through. It is in the flora, the fauna, the rivers, the creeks, and the lake, but most notably is the lone wolfpack that has claimed the land for their own. They are powerful, element-wielding warriors and protectors of Heigar's spirit, and they are known as the Wolves of Heigar. It is believed by some that the wolves are the spirits of the dragons that have fallen reborn as proud wolves, while others say that they were ordinary canids that absorbed the magic left behind by Heigar, as they reside in the remnants of her calcified bones.
But these are just stories, myths at best, and nobody knows for sure what is nonfiction and what it just old folktale. There's not been a scholar in all the realm that has been able to prove these tales true, and the origin of the stories have long since been lost to time.
