Leader of the Hunt

The role of Leader of the Hunt is assigned to the wolf who deals the finishing blow in a hunting party. The alpha will only bestow it when that wolf has brought back their first kill from their Proving, and the pack holds a ritual celebration where the Leader of the Hunt who has been training them steps down and passes the mantle on to their former apprentice. The Leaders of the Hunt are the alpha's eyes and ears when it comes to prey abundance in the territory, and are key in mediation and order within the pack itself.

The Proving Run

The Proving refers to a young wolf's first hunts, in which they may join with others who have completed apprenticeship in order to prove they are ready to join the pack's hunters. Once a group has brought back their first kill, they are honored with a place among the hunters of the pack. They will be chosen by a Leader of the Hunt, and the pack has a small ritual to invite close bonds and successful hunts. It's highly unusual for a wolf to take their Proving alone, and in fact they are actively discouraged from it by their mentors, due to the high rates of failure and injury that come with attempting to hunt without others.

The Alpha's Advisors

The pack's scouts are separated into two roles, the Alpha's Fang (🌕), and the Alpha's Claw (🌑). The Fang is their right paw, in charge of the safe-guarding of territory and the pack against threats like rival packs and unfriendly wanderers. The Claw is considered their left, whose duties are focused more on advising the alpha in matters of diplomacy with their neighbors and the greater needs of the pack. Together, the two of them help the alpha manage the pack and keep order within the territory.
