Wolves of the Twin Rivers
(CURRENTLY WIP!! Excuse the mess)
โ The stranger must have noticed your bewildered gaze, as they immediately rise to their feet and swish their tail non-threateningly. From this distance it proved easier for you to see the delicate features of the wolf. It was a female, with broad shoulders and a slender, dished face.
โ "Might be wise to get your ears checked, pup."
โ She quips, snorting to herself. Her voice was squeaky and rather rough on the ears, but with the pleasant wring of genuine enjoyment in her tone. After taking a (rather awkward) heaving second to catch her breath, she huffs deeply and you notice her ears relax a bit. She makes a vague motion with her paw, so minuscule that you were unsure whether she had even meant to do it. A mischievous glint catches in her eye.
โ "Heyโฆ wanna see something fun? My pack is full of total elkbrains, it's the best. Ooh, avoid Sigrid though, she's a total bitch and gets pissy when I invite 'outsiders' into the den."
Hmm. Now that you look at it, you can see the distant shadows of wolves among the mist. She bounds a few wide leaps into the fog, blurring her appearance quite a bit.
โ "What's wrong, bobcats got your tongue? C'moooon. I only bite on full moons. OH! And I'm Thistle, by the way."
The dark wolf pauses, looking over her shoulder and furrowing her brow.
"โฆthat's a joke. I guess they don't tell those where you're from, hm?"
โ You muster a humored groan, rolling your eyes at the wolves sarcasm, no matter how strangely charming it was. You turn your head to follow her, andโฆ wait, where'd she go?!
โ The rain drones on, a little thicker than before. You would've kept on, (as you were sure you were capable), but the mist grew so dense that you found it troublesome to continue. Deeply annoyed, you groaned, finding a particularly large tree to sulk under until the worst of it had passed.
โ Oh.
โ Oh, something's wrong.
โ All of the fur on your back stands up, and you can faintly make out two piercing eyes slicing through the fog. A gruff, deep voice without a body snarls something you can't quite understand, but you are sure it's directed at you.
โ "Hey, answer me, elkguts!"
โA large male suddenly lunges forward, his shallow eyes boring holes into yours and right through the back of your head.
โ The stature of the wolf surprises you some. He's certainly well-built- deathly large paws, broad face- but he is somewhat short in stature. Or maybe he isn't, but his voice and rude approach put the mental image of a full size grizzly in your mind. Just as he is about to snap again, you hear the smack of small paws against stone. Another, smaller male- likely an adolescent on patrol with intimidating company. Like before, you hear him first, then see his face.
โ "Koa! Watch your mouth. This is why no one ever patrols with you!"
โ You hear the larger wolf mumble obscenities under his breath as his sharp ears point in direction of the others voice.
โ "I'm very sorry about him," he smiles timidly, side-eying the brute. "He tends to play tough guy when we're out here alone. I'm Sylas, and that's my brother, Koa. You are welcome to shelter in our camp if you need." Sylas motions with his s muzzle. You hear Koa begin to snarl in protest, but the smaller wolf stomps on his paw.
โ "Please, take as long as you need."
The forest is quiet.
โ Almost eerily so- yet you find it difficult to feel anything but at peace in this strange place, soothed by the gentle mist that wades thoughtfully among the trees. You are awakened, finally, from a trance that you were unaware ever even fell upon you by the striking and only somewhat unpleasant feeling of shockingly cool liquid against your paws. A rocky brook, whose water flows astoundingly silent despite its relative speed, rests before you. Well, you have been walking for quite a whileโฆYou bend down for a drink.
โ It's refreshing and much needed, but the water is so chilled that it leaves a taste in your mouth. Ehg. After you've finished, you raise your head andโฆ wait, is that another wolf?! They had been so quiet in their approach you hadn't heard them at all. How long have they been there? Despite the odd appearance, this wolf doesn't seem to pose a threat and instead watches you with calm eyes and an amused expression.โ The stranger must have noticed your bewildered gaze, as they immediately rise to their feet and swish their tail non-threateningly. You continue on your walk.
โ You hastily skip through the freezing water, taking care to individually shake off your poor paw pads. Ouch. Still, the thought of warm rocks and yellow meadows keeps you going. You must have had a ways to go, though, as you couldn't imagine sunlight of any sort falling upon this place any time soon. You walk for some time more, and a gentle drizzle christens the land, the gentle rhythmic patter making soft sounds against the trees and soaking the rocks sweet with mildew.โ The rain drones on, a little thicker than before.
