The further into the forest you trek, the more the path winds and curls, like a snake. Unlike the serpent, however, there is no beginning or end. The leaves of the flowering trees are bright and lush, and even the vines that hang from branches, known to tangle and strangle, are bursting with vibrant greens and blues.
As your attention is drawn to the flora, you become less aware of the time of day. The forest is dappled in too many hues of light to tell. You feel drawn inward, deeper into the heart of the forest, the cries of songbirds luring you as feathered sirens.
You notice out of the corner of your eye, a shimmering of cyan, an unnatural color in nature for any save the butterfly. It fades in and out of the foliage, but never in one place for more than a moment. Something strikes you as more important, however, as you now realize the bark of the trees is stained with dyes, forming paintings.
You listen, and continue further.
24:40
These paintings are everywhere, and tell many stories in many colors. Your paws do not break stride, and unbeknownst to you, are now following a rhythm put in place by the forest itself. Of the nightengale and the woodpecker, of the skittering of squirrels, crunching of hooved beasts in the underbrush.
You inhale, still pulled in by the thrush and throng of nature's music, ears flooded with the beautiful strains of wildlife, eyes drinking in the sights, paintings illuminated by golden glowing fireflies.
The insects suddenly turn robin colored in a patch of thick, lush grass ahead of you. You then notice those "fireflies" are attached to fur. The fur of another wolf!
You have no time to berate your senses failing you, as the wolf approaches. A quick scenting of the air reveals he is male.
His body is lithe, but his pelt is shaggy and thick, like those of hunting dogs belonging to the ancient beasts, whispered about only in the moonless nights. His collar and unders are white like snow, and his back and tipped tail are a blend of charcoal and sand.
His dark, umber eyes meet yours solemnly, illuminated by the glowing blue patches of fur that frame his face.
Yes, you think to yourself, there is no mistaking the eons old dogged gaze in those eyes. His ancestors once bowed before the ancient beasts.
Soon, you are aware of the once dancing fireflies are now the only source of light in the forest.
Sensing no danger from the strange Lupe, you raise your tail, but relax your hackles in a neutral greeting.
"You've wandered far, stranger." His accent is thick, and his voice young, betraying the wisdom in his eyes. "If ye wish to survive the madness of this forest, follow me."
You sense you have little choice but to agree to this.
"Those who are reckless in their steps find themselves lost unto the bone-rattlers."
Bone-rattlers? They were real?
Images of wolf skeletons clattering as they dangled from invisible strings, brown, dry vines their sinews haunting your mind for a brief, gut sinking moment.
"Best ye keep close, lest ye wish to become one."
The music of the forest softened, the peat and moss cushioning your paws as you blindly followed this odd wolf further into the endless forest.
"I will take you to our tribe. If our Queen deigns it, ye will remain. If she does not..." Swiftlight, as you now knew him as, spoke gently. "Ye will be returned to the edge of the forest."
Before you have time to respond, the trees and bushes suddenly give way to a massive clearing. So massive, you can't fathom why you hadn't seen it from miles back.
It is lined by a grove of sweet smelling fruit trees in full bloom.
The full moon shines down, breaking through the misty clouds, casting a faint rainbow across the imposing wedge shaped boulder in the center of the meadow. A towering willow shades the outcrop.
A mighty gust blows through the clearing, and when you open your eyes again, it's as if the forest once more has sprung to life with music. From behind the waving lavender strands of the willow, a golden figure appears.
Squinting, scenting, you determine the creature is a Luna.
She is foxlike, her fur thick and plush, silkening at the ends.
The female wolf's aquamarine eyes reflect the moon, and she turns them downward to meet yours in gentle greeting.
The music swells into a full blown symphony as her tail raises, and you see it split apart into three full plumes.
The sounds of pups geckering and playing reach your ears, and you now see the meadow is teeming with life.
Wolves of all ages and colors appear as if out of the woodwork, approaching you slowly, hypnotically.
Swiftlight beside you suddenly throws his head back, letting out a wavering howl. It is joined in a choir of young and old, Luna and Lupe, and finally by the Queen herself.
The breeze whips around the members of the tribe.
You watch, mesmerized, unable to deny the delirium of mystic bliss shared within this forest of wolves.
