the air was dense with moisture, clinging to your pelt and weighing you down. despite the sun having gone down hours ago, the sweltering heat still held its grip tight on your lungs. blood-sucking insects swarmed, following your every move, wiggling through your fur to get to your tender flesh.
having gone against your better judgment, you had wandered into the swamplands past sundown, but now you're regretting every decision you've made thus far.
as you snap at a particularly greedy mosquito, you see something flash past your face, and you freeze, ears pricked and your body tensed. what was that? you think, all thoughts of the swarm swiftly disappearing.
"are you lost, little snack? a voice crows from the shadows, making you jump. all that you could see around you were small ponds of muddy water and towering mangrove trees. something swooped overhead, diving at you, before soaring away. a bat, maybe? your lip curls and you snap at it in defense but miss entirely. in the blink of an eye, it was gone.
something cackles in the darkness, echoing off of the trees and bouncing back. it sounded like it was coming from multiple directions at once, pressing in on you, suffocating you. it was such a horrible, grating sound. you hunker down and let out a whimper, your sensitive ears throbbing in pain.
"aw, flourish, the trespasser begs for mercy!"
something steps out from the shadows in front of you, something that vaguely resembles a wolf, but disfigured. its neck was sloped and curved like a swan's, and its dark gray eyes were much too big and round for its small head. perhaps most horrifying of all were the rows of sharp, needle-like teeth, glimmering in the light from the glowing beads hanging from her neck. something dove down from the tree she was standing behind, landing on her shoulder. it was a raven covered in dreamland essence.
the creature beams at you, dark pupils mere slits.
"let's show them mercy, yes?"
she lunged, and everything went dark.

symbols and their meanings
⧲ - the queen. an evolved version of the female symbol shows her elevated status and how she rose to power. there is only one queen at a time. she is the most powerful and is the ruler of the pack. the current queen is prosper.
⨗ - the king. representing the king's ability to choose any job he desires, this symbol includes the arrows of the male symbol, which represents his masculinity. the bonded mate of the queen. despite common practice in other packs, the king is required to have a job. the current king is solitude.
⍕ - the heiress. representing the step before ascending the throne, this unique symbol shows that the holder is next in line. this can be held by any female, whether or not she is related to the queen (blood or adopted). the current heiress is genuine.
⦵ - the symbol for females. represents femininity and level-headedness. every female wolf, except for the queen, has this symbol.
⦽ - the symbol for males. similar to the roman symbol for mars, the god of war, and the representation of masculinity. every male wolf, except for the king, has this symbol.
➳ - the symbol for hunters. represents a human's arrow, a common image of hunting. every wolf within a hunting group is required to have this symbol.
⍟ - the symbol for scouts. represents the Star Raven's eye and the ability to observe the unseen. every scout is required to have this symbol.
☤ - the herbalist's symbol, representing healing, wisdom, alchemy, and ancient magic. often observed to be seen with the greek god hermes. only the herbalist is allowed this symbol, as the art of herbalism is indeed a sacred practice.
❦ - this symbol represents the loving and kind-hearted nature expected from all pupsitters.
〄 - representing the winding paths and trails a wolf has taken, the Wandering Ones, commonly referred to as "travelers" outside, earn this symbol upon their return home.
〶 - similar to a crossroads, this symbol represents wisdom and knowledge. once a wolf has become an elder (and had a previous occupation), they are entrusted as a mentor. this is a highly respected position and is personally chosen by the queen herself.
❁ - the symbol for pups, this represents the flowering magic within each child.
⌑ - the symbol for juveniles and apprentices, indicates that their training is underway. every juvenile is to be trained, regardless of background.
␢ - this symbol is strictly for wolves without occupations. if a juvenile ages up and no positions need to be filled, they are given this title. sometimes, if a spot opens up, the most qualified wolf without a job will fill that role, and this symbol is replaced with that job.
✰ - this is reserved only for chased wolves (which we have found), and goes at the end of one's name.
❥ - this is reserved only for the breeding male. if the breeding male does not already have a role, this will replace the "␢" symbol.
✄ - symbolizing one's life thread being snipped, this belongs solely to wolves that displease the pack. they will be banished into the death mires, starved, and deprived of any and all amusement until they die or leave on their own accord. if these wolves somehow catch an illness, they will not be treated and not be moved into the quarantine cave.
