Order of Scantlebury Wood
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted.
— 'Kubla Khan', Samuel Taylor Coleridge
The old wood, where gods are said to dwell...
Scantlebury Wood is a boreal forest known for its sweeping hills and undulating landscape. Newcomers are charmed by its beauty: sunny glades, burbling streams and pockets of mist. But this inviting picture is deceptive. Scantlebury is a deep and ancient forest. Sharp gulfs and hidden ravines make the sunniest pathways treacherous. Nocturnal predators lurk in the trees. Strange whispering sounds, like a hissing wind, rise from the mouths of caves. Rumour has it that Scantlebury Wood is haunted by spirits, and its inhabitants are possessed.
Our Lady of Scantlebury Wood
After many seasons, wolves have returned to Scantlebury Wood: a group of forest vigilantes led by the graceful Lady Fleur. The pack maintains a peaceful, orderly existence, following the traditions of the ancient Order that once guarded this forest. When you approach the Wood, you might see them weaving between the trees. Mist clings to their pelts. If you approach, they will scatter like raindrops. If you wait, their leader will come to greet you.
She introduces herself as Lady Fleur. There’s something vaguely ethereal about her: soft fur, the faint scent of honey and melaleuca. She watches you quietly for a moment before rejoining her huntresses. As their silhouettes melt into the foliage, laughter rings out; it’s almost musical.
