You lost track of how long you’ve been running, the fresh pain in your leg begging, practically screaming for you to be still, your heart thumping in your ears. You made no sense of the trees blurring around you as you wildly sprinted through the forest, your destination abandoned, albeit the fact that all you wanted to do was get away from those who sought to be rid of you.

You burst through the trees, exhaustion seeping into your limbs, you find yourself standing in a clearing. Moonlight shining through the open treetops, casting a blue shadow among the natural view. You knew you couldn’t stop here, though, as fear drove your senses, forcing you to use your scarce energy to get through the clearing, the eerie openness of it shaking you down to your core. As you struggled through the area, your mind thought of a sense of freedom, the tree line acting as a brief hug from the wilderness, tears gleaming in your eyes as you pushed yourself farther and farther to the next limit. You were almost there.. you could practically sense the freedom--

Your body drops harshly against the soft grass. To your horror, fatigue seemed to have claimed you, the fleeting energy quickly fading, pain filling in where your strength had left. You could feel your torn-up leg pound in piercing beats, a lethargic wave overcoming your senses. You barely comprehended a hushed, echoing whisper, acting as a lullaby to finally lure you to unconsciousness, vaguely spotting your own face mirrored back at you before your eyes gave into sleep.

”It’s alright, now. You’re safe here...”
