As I stood upon a hill with a lonesome tree I traced my fingers over the dozens of carved in names encircled in hearts. It was cute, but I couldn't help but wonder how much pain the tree was in, and if any of these couples actually made it. Deep in thought I lowered myself to the leaf littered floor and watched as the crystal clear winter sky changed to a darker garb. In this moment a lonesome breeze carrying frost on its wings chimed in, "what is love without pain?" The words were so clear in my head that I looked around, searching, for whoever had found me in my state of brooding. There was no one, and I was alone on that star bathed hill. Whatever the voice was, be it my head or some spirit, it was right; love isn't love without sacrifice. And looking back now I have a feeling the tree didn't mind all that much that it was being used as a pillar of declaration for all the lovers who had made their mark on it.
