A nasty fight over leadership led to a split in Mayfly's pack, and perhaps more significantly, orphaned him. The new alpha demanded an end to the blood of his predecessor, and in the cover of a raging storm, Mayfly's fierce aunt led him to safety. In the tradition of their ancestors, they took new names when they left their pack, considering the loss of their pack a death of sorts. His mother's sister named him after the short-lived mayfly, knowing that her chances of keeping the frail young thing alive longer than the insect's single day were slim. When the two were carelessly separated, she feared the worst. By dumb luck, Mayfly ended up at the feet of a kind and scrutinizing wolf who brought them both to safety in the folds of her own home pack.
Mayfly and Asperitas grew close as they grew up together, trusting each other with their sad stories of their puppyhood. They fell in love and formed a pair bond.
