CHAPTER ONE: MUSINGS OF THE FIRST PRINCE
As the son of the Alpha, Aejor was born a prince. He was raised with certain expectations in mind, though he stood to inherit little, as he was not born a Dreamwalker and therefore not in line for leadership. Pah. It was all nonsense anyway, Aejor figured. It had to be some excuse by his mother to not choose one of her children to inherit.
Not that Aejor wanted to inherit. It all seemed like a whole bunch of work. He had enough work to do as a hunter. Being a leader on top of that was too much.
But still. He wasn't sure of his mother's choice of heir. Aluria Phoenixsong, supposedly the greatest Dreamwalker to ever live, blah, blah, blah. Sure, whatever they said. He figured it was more because of her exotic looks than anything. The pack had only two albinos born into it, and Aluria's elder sister was too old to take over as a leader in the events of his mother's death.
His mate Krisyra told him it was of no matter. "What's done is done," she'd said as she lazed in her corner of the den. Aejor had begrudgingly nodded along. It wasn't like he could ever change his mother's mind once she was set on something.
Still, his parents were old now. Aejor was no shining example of youth, either, but he had some years left in him. Someday soon, his parents would lie down and not get up. Then Aluria would take over, and the whole pack would be upheaved, mark his words. There was no such thing as a peaceful transition in this world. Aejor had heard the stories from those who'd come from outside packs. It was a disaster waiting to happen. Aejor could only hope it didn't bother him or his family too much. No matter his mother's flaws, she'd taken some precautions for her children. The title of prince was one of them. His word was still respected, no matter if that title was little more than ceremonial.
Aejor broke from his musings with a yawn and stretched his body out. The day was nearly over, but they still had some sunlight left. Another hunt would do the pack good.
