Named after the: King of Corinth, who ruled his kingdom as a gentle man and loved his wife dearly, even though she struggled to bear him a child. He took in the orphan Oedipus at one point, and raised the child well. Kind and well enough, that when a God warned Oedipus that he was fated to kill his father and marry his mother, Oedipus was horrified and exiled himself, not knowing that the prophecy was referring to his biological parents, rather than his adoptive ones.
