'Not everything is as simple as they may seem."
Ever since he was a little pup, Vulcan has always been interested in dark magic and, well, dark things in general. His mother says there was a time when he was innocent and playful like all the other pups, but something pushed him over the edge. Now, he spends his time casting spells and using his dark magic to "help" others. He makes deals with wolves desperate enough to seek help from him, and the prices are high, but their wish is his command.
"One down. Who knows how many more?"
"Vulcan, you have to help me." Raven whispered urgently, flinching as she set foot into his cave. The heat made her fur stick up.
"Well, well, well," Vulcan craned his head over to get a glimpse of his new visitor. "Look who it is. Raven."
"Yes," Raven told him irritably. She was older than Vulcan by about a year, but when she learned of his dark magic, she spent days asking around for the location of his cave.
"What is your wish?" Vulcan asked, getting up and grabbing a piece of parchment.
Raven hesitated and her gaze fell to her paws. "I wish to become in a way that will let other wolves see my beauty."
"Ah, are our packmates not treating you well?" Vulcan guessed. He had not been outside of his cave in months. Raven shook her head. "Very well. Here's your deal."
The piece of parchment floated by itself out of Vulcan's grasp and landed in front of Raven's paws. She stared at it in confusion.
"I give you your wish, and you give me your sanity," Vulcan told her.
Raven's eyes widened for a brief second. The black and red demon wolf laughed softly. Perhaps she had not expected the cost to be so high. Then she swallowed and nodded.
"Just remember you cannot go back," Vulcan warned. "Once your sanity is gone, so will all traces of happiness."
"When I get my wish, I will get my happiness back," Raven told him confidently. Vulcan only laughed.
"Alright then, stamp your paw print here." He offered some ink for Raven to dip her paw in. She dipped it in and stamped her paw on the parchment. Dark fog surrounded her and her transformation began. Her chocolate brown fur turned green and a pair of black feather wings sprouted from her back, a reminder of her deal with the demon. Her transformation was complete, and her sanity was gone.
"What if we rewrite the stars? Say you were made to be mine."
The sun was setting, painting the sky with shades of pink and orange as the young wolves gathered around Nova. The old herbalist stood tall, her eyes closed, as if listening to something only she could hear. Nightshimmer sat beside Vulcan, their pelts brushing against each other. She loved moments like this—when everything felt simple, carefree.
Vulcan, always full of mischief, nudged her playfully. "Think she's going to tell us another one of her boring stories?" he whispered, a teasing grin spreading across his face.
Nightshimmer giggled, nudging him back. "Hush, she might hear you," she whispered, though there was a light in her eyes. Vulcan had a way of making even the dullest moments feel exciting.
But Nova's voice cut through their whispers, sharp and clear. "I have seen a vision," she began, her eyes snapping open. "A shadow darkens our future… and I know who brings it."
The pack grew quiet, all eyes turning to Nova. Even Vulcan stopped his teasing, curious despite himself. "What's she talking about?" he muttered under his breath.
Nova's gaze was fixed, piercing, and as it swept over the young wolves, it seemed to land directly on Vulcan. "I have seen a wolf among us… one who will bring destruction, who will turn into a monster feared by all."
A murmur rippled through the pack, and Nightshimmer felt a shiver run down her spine. "A monster?" she whispered, glancing at Vulcan, who was frowning now.
Nova nodded solemnly. "Yes, a monster. I cannot say when, but the signs are clear. Dark fur, eyes that burn like fire…" She paused, her gaze locking onto Vulcan again. "Vulcan, it is you."
Vulcan's playful grin vanished, replaced by a look of shock. He blinked, as if trying to process what he had just heard. "Me?" he scoffed, a nervous laugh escaping his lips. "That's ridiculous, Nova. I'm not a monster. I'm just me."
But the pack began to shift, some wolves muttering to each other, casting wary glances at him. Nightshimmer felt her heart tighten. "Nova," she said, her voice small, "there must be some mistake. Vulcan isn't… he wouldn't hurt anyone."
Nova's eyes softened, but her voice remained firm. "I know what I saw, Nightshimmer. The future is not always kind, and this vision was clear."
Vulcan's ears flattened against his head, and he forced a grin, trying to make light of it. "Come on, everyone," he said, his tone a bit too bright, "this is just a story, right? Who's going to believe in something like that?"
But his laughter didn't seem to lift the mood. Some of the wolves were already moving away, their expressions uneasy. Nightshimmer stayed close, but she could feel the change in the air. It was as if a wall had suddenly gone up between Vulcan and the rest of the pack.
Over the next few days, things grew worse. Whispers followed him wherever he went. Wolves who once played and laughed with him now turned their backs, whispering to each other when he passed. Vulcan tried to keep his spirits up, teasing and joking as always, but Nightshimmer could see the strain in his eyes.
"Hey, Nightshimmer," he called one day, when they were alone by the river. "Do you think I'm a monster?" He tried to say it casually, but there was a hint of fear in his voice.
Nightshimmer shook her head quickly. "Of course not," she said firmly. "You're still you, Vulcan. Prophecies… they don't have to be true."
But even as she spoke, she felt a small seed of doubt plant itself in her heart. What if…? She shook the thought away, trying to ignore the way the other wolves glanced at them, the way their whispers seemed to grow louder with each passing day.
Vulcan gave her a lopsided grin. "Good," he said, but his voice was quieter than usual. "Because I'm not planning to become anyone's monster."
But as they turned to leave, Nova's words echoed in her mind, and for the first time, Nightshimmer found herself wondering… what if the prophecy was right? What if Vulcan's teasing smile and playful nature were just hiding something darker?
Vulcan's grin faded as he sensed her hesitation, and he looked away, a shadow passing over his face. And from that moment, the pack started to keep their distance, leaving Vulcan to face his own doubts… and the darkness that seemed to be slowly creeping in.
Two Months Later
The stars hung high in the night sky, a thousand tiny lights scattered across the dark canvas. Nightshimmer stood in the clearing, her green eyes focused on the heavens, as if searching for answers in their glow. The cool breeze carried the scent of pine and earth, and she felt a familiar presence behind her before she heard his footsteps.
Vulcan emerged from the shadows, his red and black fur blending with the dark around him, his red eyes flickering like embers. He approached slowly, sensing the tension in the air. "Nightshimmer," he began, his voice low and soft. "You asked to meet me here."
She turned to face him, her heart heavy with what she had to say. "Vulcan," she said, her voice almost a whisper. "We need to talk."
He tilted his head, a teasing smile touching his lips, trying to ease the mood. "Sounds serious," he joked lightly, though his eyes searched hers for some clue. "What's on your mind, Night?"
She hesitated, then spoke with a sigh, "It's about us. About… everything." Her gaze dropped to the ground, unable to meet his. "I don't know if we can keep pretending this is going to work."
Vulcan's smile faded. "What do you mean?" he asked, stepping closer. "We've always talked about fighting fate, about rewriting what's been written for us. You can't tell me you've given up."
Nightshimmer felt her chest tighten, hearing his words. They had always dreamed of changing their story, of finding a way to be together despite everything. "I want to believe that," she replied, her voice trembling, "but I can't ignore what everyone is saying… what I'm seeing."
Vulcan's expression darkened. "You're talking about that prophecy again, aren't you?" he said, his tone sharpening. "The one where Nova said I'd turn into some… some monster?"
Nightshimmer nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. "I tried to ignore it, Vulcan, really. I tried to see past it, to see you for who you are… but lately…" She paused, gathering her courage. "Lately, I've started to wonder if maybe… maybe she was right."
Vulcan flinched as if struck, his eyes narrowing. "So, you're saying you don't believe in me anymore?" he asked, his voice hurt. "After everything we've been through, after everything I've done to prove I'm still the same wolf?"
"I'm saying," Nightshimmer said softly, "that I don't know if love is enough to rewrite the stars, Vulcan. I don't know if we can change what's already written."
His jaw tightened, a mix of anger and sadness flashing across his face. "So that's it?" he demanded. "You're just going to walk away? Give up on everything we dreamed about?"
Tears welled up in her eyes. "I'm not giving up," she said, her voice breaking. "I'm just… I'm just tired of fighting against something that feels impossible."
Vulcan's eyes blazed. "Nothing is impossible," he insisted. "We could've made it work, Nightshimmer. We could've proven them all wrong. But you… you're the one who's lost faith."
Nightshimmer shook her head, her tears falling freely now. "Maybe," she whispered, "or maybe I just realized that sometimes, love isn't enough to change fate."
Vulcan stared at her, his heart pounding with a mix of anger, hurt, and desperation. "So you're just going to leave me?" he asked, his voice barely more than a whisper.
She looked away, unable to bear the pain in his eyes. "I think it's better this way," she murmured. "For both of us."
He laughed bitterly, a sound that made her flinch. "Better?" he scoffed. "Better to live apart? Better to let them decide our future?"
Nightshimmer closed her eyes, trying to hold back more tears. "I'm sorry," she said softly. "I'm sorry I can't be the wolf who changes your destiny."
Vulcan stepped back, his expression hardening. "Then maybe you were never meant to be," he replied coldly. "Maybe the stars were right after all."
She looked up, a final tear slipping down her cheek. "Goodbye, Vulcan," she whispered, her voice breaking.
He turned away, his shoulders tense, refusing to watch her leave. But as she walked away, he muttered under his breath, "I'll show you… I'll show you all. I'll become the monster you feared, if that's what you want."
The wind blew, and the stars seemed to dim, as if they too felt the weight of what had just been lost under their eternal light.
