Aura Quartz lay deep in her den- her mother's, really- wondering briefly of a question that she hadn't yet though of before.
"Mum," She asked the stunning wolf curled around her- Dream of Mind and Heart, the leader of their cozy pack. "You mentioned pairbonding before… about how all kinds of wolves that love each other can do that, but… why did you never?"
Dream smiled, swiping her tongue over the young pup's ear. "I just never found the right wolf. I lost my own mother at a young age… October of Mind and Heart, your grandmother. Not by blood, but in heart. Achilles, our past herbalist, never found a pairbond, either."
Aura smiled, rolling onto her back as her tail wagged.
"Achilles- the one before Hazelnut?"
"Yes."
"Did October pairbond?"
Dream paused, nodding. "Yes, a beautiful she-wolf named Idyll. As she grew old, she discovered powers rooted deep in the Earth. October herself had powers of life and spirit. Illusion, tricks of the mind. My father had no powers, hailing from another region yet undiscovered."
The pup's tail wagged faster. She loved this story. "And what of Clairvoyant, and Chip?"
The alpha shifted to curl her tail around the younger wolf. "Clairvoyant had powerful visions and premonitions… while Chip had the power of second sight. They, too, were another of the best pairbonds. They adopted Starseer together… poor pup."
Aura's ears fell. She recalled the loss. She cheered up a moment later as another thought hit her.
"Jasper."
Her closest companion. A beloved friend. "I want to be in a pairbond with her when I grow older."
Dream nodded, still smiling.
"One paw at a time, little one, one paw at a time. Would you like to hear another story?"
"Sure, mum!"
"Okay… this one is about two of our pack's first mutated wolves- Candy Corn, a piebald, and Shadow, a melanistic- Shadow, named in honor of another wolf from a pack close to ours. Some of our wolves were travelled from that pack, but they are all long gone now. Right, now, about Candy and Shadow."
