Hemlock departed the Gardens in the winter. Seeking warmer country, he meandered down the mountainside, keeping to the path of a frozen stream. The stream eventually danced its way into a river, made sluggish with ice, and the river wandered eastward, through gently rolling hills and barren forests, before spreading out into a shallow bend.
Here, chilled and hungry, Hemlock encountered an association of wolves, whose conduct he found odd. Their organizational structure was loose, with their pack's roles relating more to shared subjects of interest than practical skills. At various points, his opinion changed as to who might be the leader of the collective: the friendly golden wolf who seemed to handle most relations with other packs? The strange-smelling wolf Hemlock decided to call a scout, with her cold, sharp eyes, able to pick out impossibly small details in ordinary objects? Or perhaps the unfriendly herbalist- this role they agreed upon- who was the first wolf to find Hemlock, encountering him in the woods as she gathered the remains of a barren clump of tansy.
Led back to the group's gathering space, Hemlock was invited by a few friendly wolves to rest his paws. This suggestion was denied by the herbalist, who insisted on leading him to a cavern, inspecting his paws for "foreign detritus"- she cleaned away a few glowing spores with some interest- and criticizing his decision to travel during the winter. By the time she had finished, the friendly group had departed (to hunt, he assumed), and, as he introduced himself to the rest of the pack, Hemlock found himself accosted by a gaggle of unsupervised pups.
Taking the role of unofficial, unsupervised "pupsitter" for a few days, Hemlock attempted to provide the children some education on more typical pack structure. While some found the entire concept ridiculous, a few seemed intrigued, asking him how they might also come to travel and experience other packs' cultures.
Hemlock gradually found himself endeared to the chaotic group, and decided to stay a bit longer.
Eventually, he re-encountered the wolves who had invited him to join them on his first day. Although he was unable to assist them in their "studies" (which he never fully understood, despite his best efforts), he found himself forming them into a hunting party, leading them as a stalker.
Here, his external experience was invaluable: while he lacked their meticulous knowledge of the strange phenomena that would often distract them from the practicalities of hunting, he was able to provide them structure, introduce a new member to help fill out their party, and nominate a successor to his self-appointed role as stalker.
In providing that leadership, he took the brunt of the inexperienced group's mistakes, and acquired a scar on his front leg. He felt this matched the scar he had acquired in the mountains, believing the combination gave an appealing "ruggedness" to his appearance. (His huntmates had varying opinions on this, but kept those to themselves.)
Departing in the spring, a time of abundant prey, Hemlock wished his new friends good hunting. In turn, they gifted him a memento from their territory: a bush, which they insisted was "area-exclusive" and "valuable". Hemlock got the impression, somehow, that this was not, in fact, the case. However, on his way out, he found himself accompanied by a dove- one of the ragtag flock of birds that "assisted" the whole collective in "research", somehow- that seemed to better fit the description.
