Spottedpelt was first found by Talayazhi as she explored the new lads of Ashen Cypress. He was skin and bones, cold and all alone, back then and the coywolf had wasted no time to bring him back to the pack's den. Under Duskleaf's watchful eye and care he went from being a paw-step away from death's door to a full recovery, and grew up along the company of Ashbreeze and Nightstream as if they had always been littermates.
As he grew older he became a pupil under Bearpelt. From his mentor he learned the arts of the hunt: how to discern the smells in the undergrowth and find the trail of prey, the best paths to take when chasing quarry into a trap and, of course, the most important one of all--how to deal the killing blow.
During his mentorship he was often picked on and bullied by Nightstream, the she-wolf constantly claiming him to be a worthy rival for herself. This rivalry would continue as they grew older and joined their hunting squads, spurring them both to achieve better results with each hunt in an attempt to one-up the other one. At one point he began to develop more feelings for the dark she-wolf, but one early morning during late autumn of year two Nightstream would be taken away from him before Spottedpelt could gather the courage to confess.
