Shattered Sycamore was born on the cold side of the Pine Mountain, along with his sibling Jagged Ash, to two lone wolves. Their father wandered off sometime late in their first moon to hunt, and did not return. Their mother, weakening more and more due to not being able to both hunt and nurse, did everything she could to keep them strong until they were weaned. She succeeded, and when the siblings turned 6 months old she pointed them towards Needle Pass and told them that if they walked all the way to the other side of Pine Mountain, they would find warm dens and plentiful prey. Jagged Ash did not want to leave their mother, but she chased them off with the last of her strength.
It took two seasons for he and Jagged Ash to make it through the pass, and by then they were both a year old, getting stronger every day. They were in healthy competition now, joking to each other about which one would be able to build a strong pack the quickest. However, while Jagged Ash wanted their pack based in community and loyalty, Shattered Sycamore was most concerned with beauty and ability - he wanted his pack to be the best at everything, and gorgeous to match. They did not let this difference drive a wedge between each other, though.
Unfortunately, just the day before Shattered Sycamore met Tala, the siblings got into a fight with a traveling wolf pack. They killed Jagged Ash, and Shattered Sycamore barely escaped with his life. Tala of course ran across him and, though he was now wary of any stranger wolf, managed to get him patched him up and set him on his way to greatness.
