Fungi came from a long line of finishers. As a pup, he excelled as the training exercises and quickly earned his name, bestowed upon him like a badge by his Lykaon, Swiftflame. Unfortunately his dedication did not continue and he began to slack in his exercises—what need did he have of them? His strength was innate, and he was even stronger than the oldest guard.
He was arrogant.
When he became one year of age, gathered together with the best crop of youths—those destined by line or talent, sometimes both, to become part of the Lykaon's first party, Fungi did not so much as lift a paw to qualify. He was the best of the best. He outcompeted wolves from the best lines and wolves who trained the hardest. Fungi was simply the most talented, strongest wolf in the land to ever have been whelped.
He did not fail his Lykaon, but as the years went on, his laziness combined with his arrogance caused him to fall behind. Each year, Fungi fell further behind in the Red Ridge assessments. Each year he was further demoted. Once having the Lykaon's favor, that gaze turned to scorn.
"You had so much promise," he remembered being told. Those yellow eyes looked at him and turn away, the Lykaon's cape the last thing he saw.
Fungi was then cast out to the third party, where there was less prestige. He did still have the Lykaon's trust but not his favor. There, Fungi seethed. His honor had been stripped from him, and he was the laughingstock of the pack.
Once the first in line finisher of all the territories, Fungi had tarnished his legacy.
