"Mother?" Everglade peeps out into the silence, only broken by rushing water and rocks tumbling below.
"Yes, Ever?" Whisper rasps.
"Why must you favor me more than Brother?"
Quickly she licks his forehead, forcing him to swipe a paw over the newly wet and raised fur. He hated when she did that.
"Hush now, stop this nonsense." She shushes as usual. Everglade sighs, the response he always gets. He couldn't understand why his brother was neglected. He was the bigger, stronger of the two. Maybe that's why, because Mother felt he could fend for himself? No...
There was something in the unreadable expression she carried, something he could never understand. Something deeper, well hidden.
Something not meant to be unearthed or disturbed.
