"I can't wait to grow up! Maybe I'll be a hunter, or a herbalist, Oo maybe I'll leave and be a trader! Mom? Why do you look so sad? Is it something I said?"
Her mother thought that there was another puppy inside of Pauk and she still wonders to his da if she is somehow two wolves.
Years later
My mother, Mable is now seven years old.soon, she will pass away. So will Orao. So will Neve. Then Fox. All the wolves in this pack, everyone I know, they are all dyeing as I know it. And yet I'll be left behind. I will live forever, and my friends will not. How will I be able to live through all this sadness? I wish I could just die! … but there's nothing I can do. I must push on. If only… if only I had a friend that could stay with me forever. If only.
As the years passed, more and more of Pauk's friends started to pass away. One day she walked to the new spirit guide Raubtier and vented her great sadness. From any point before this, no one knew that Pauk was depressed. Only Wraith, Mable, and the old medicine wolf Kougar knew, and they are all dead. To Raubtier she asked, "teach me your ways. I want to guide the spirits with you. I have no point on this earth yet I will live forever. All my friends will die and I want to help them more. Please?". Raubtier shook his head, "I am sorry, Pauk, you will be unable to guide the spirits. Your role here is to guide the leaders, year after year after year." Pauk sighed and sobbed quietly, but she knew that he was right.
Pauk sits calmly next to Alpha Realeza, just like she did with Alpha Mable years ago. Pauk always knew when a leaders time was over. She'd listen quietly to the shallow breaths as the spiritual leader, Rubitzer walked in. He must know too. They waited together, for the first time in a while, as the Alpha's breath grew slow then stopped. Pauk was too sad to watch the rest. She still didn't under stand why he got to live while everyone else died. But, she did also know that without her, many of the wolves in the pack would be lonely or lost. Especially the leaders. She has been a guide since he learned to walk and talk. And he must continue his work, no matter how old he got.
The pack was on their fourth leader now, and still Pauk was feeling alone. The feeling was almost gone most days though, since she found out that she was doing what she loved, guiding the other pack members and mostly, guiding the pack leaders. But just recently one of the females gave birth to a blind puppy. Pauk knew that she had a chance to have a new forever friend, but she also didn't want this new puppy to be forced into an everlasting life like she way. So, she decided to let the blind puppy choose what she wanted. Pauk hoped with all her heart that she could have a new friend, but she also would be glad if the blind pup chose to stay mortal, since Pauk knew that her life was hard.
She said no. She didn't want to be immortal with Paul, but she couldn't complain. If she had the choice she should choose to stay mortal too, but she didn't have the choice, it was her parents choice, and the leaders choice. But luckily the shy little blind pup decided to help her even though she won't be immortal. For just a moment, Pauk didn't feel so alone.
"Shpresa" Pauk sobbed, "what will I do without you?" Pauk had lived alone her whole life, and now her closest friend was dying.
"There will be another, don't worry friend." Shpresa sighed, nuzzling the immortal pup.
"But I will never see you again…" Pauk had grown used to loosing everyone she knew, but this time she didn't think she could make it.
"I will always be with you. Remember when you told me about Raubtier?" She reminded Pauk of the tale of an old pack wolf that the immortal pup had told her about.
"No one like him is around anymore" Pauk said, looking away.
"I think there is…" Pauk turned to follow Shpresa's gaze as she looked towards the medic's den. There two pups frolicked, one orange pup with a bright pearly blue gaze and a pink one with solid white eyes who kept stopping while playing to stare at nothing.
"She's blind…" Pauk looked away
"But so was Raubtier." Shpresa turned towards Paul again
"Maybe… but she will be too young to guide you"
"Then I will wait here with you." She insisted
Pauk gave up arguing with her closest friend and nuzzled into her warm belly and fell asleep to her rhythmic breathing.
Naděje was a strong leader, maybe even one of the best. She guided the pack through tough times with ease and the wolves flourished as a result. Pups were being born left and right, elders were living longer, and prey was plentiful. Ever challenge Naděje faced with not only strength, but also intelligence. Pauk was glad that her friend got to spend the end of her life under Naděje's strong leadership.
Naděje, though now old and weak, stood tall over her pack, watching them wander around the camp. She didnt want to be leader, but now she couldnt imagine not having her role, but she knew that soon, she would have to let it go. Next to her stood Pauk, her closest friend. Pauk had helped her learn and appreciate the role of Alpha and stayed by her side no mater what, but Pauk could not come with her when she left the pack to the next leader. She would always be left behind to help the next leader. "I wish you could come, and yet, I am so proud that you are willing to stay." Pauk was confused, what Naděje said didn't make much sense. Noticing her confusion, Naděje sat down and looked at her eight-legged companion. "You could leave whenever you want, explore the entire world, yet you stay, and you help the pack. We wouldn't be here anymore if it weren't for you."
"What's wrong with Uroj?" Arrosa, the nearly blind she-wolf asked Pauk, even though she was sure she already knew. "He reminds me too much of Shpresa... i miss her so much, and I'm not ready to replace her yet. He has the same condition, he looks extremely similar, and he acts like her." Pauk didnt look up at Arrosa as she spoke to her, instead fidgeting with a dead leaf laying on the ground. "He need you, you know? Just as Shpresa needed you." Pauk finally looked up at her words, sorrow in her eyes, "I know..." She hesitated, "...but i can do it." She stood up on her back legs, now strong after years of lifting the limp weight of her many extra limps, and wobbled over to the young blind wolf.
Macan Biru was in interesting wolf. She was rescued from a white tiger by the wolves of The Falling River when she happened to be pregnant. Her pups could not be saved, since her abdomen was destroyed. The herbalist did everything she could for the she-wolf, and she did survive, but not without many problems. She was physically unable to bear pups ever again and was always in pain. She was forever grateful for the Falling River wolves and gave her life to them, always doing whatever she was told to do. She would never be a normal wolf again. Pauk never stopped feeling sympathy for her, her life was destroyed while she was at a very young age, but she never broke down or showed her sorrow. Pauk had been around for so long though that he knew she was always in pain, and always sad. She spent many nights comforting the lonely young wolf.
"Korkusu is a wise choice, it doesn't matter if she will be a little older than almost all the other leaders have been." Pauk nodded to Naděje after she chose the next wolf to be leader.
"I can sense that she will be one of the best." Uroj said, his blind eyes staring through Naděje as he spoke.
"Yes, one of the best our pack has ever seen." Arrosa, a nearly blind she wolf chimed in.
"And since she is older than the others were, we can train and prepare her, unlike you, Naděje, after being shoved into the position before you were ready." Pauk smiled and nuzzled the elderly leader who had served them for so long.
"Yes. You have made an amazing choice. Well done Naděje." Bomvu, Arrosa's nearly blind son, added
Kusa, the herbalist, walked over after tending to the new pup and her mother, "I couldn't help but overhear you talking, and I agree. This pup is so young, and yet I have never seen such a smart and kind young she-wolf. She will be one of the best leaders we have ever had."
Pauk now lay next her dying leader, the fifth leader of the pack. Naděje started her time as leader a shy and quiet wolf, and ended up strong and noble. Though the pack was not sure of her at first, she quickly took her place and ruled with a gentle heart. She always did the right thing, checking with the rest of the pack and hearing their opinions before ever making a decision. Pauk sighed sadly, yet another great leader was passing right before her eyes. Beside her sat two other wolves, Arrosa, the current pack's spiritual leader, the nearly blind she-wolf who could see not only the living, but also the dead, and Uroj, one of the strongest wolves Pauk has ever seen, a completely blind and very young male wolf who lived halfway in the world of death through his vision, and halfway in the world of the living with his sense of touch. Even Shpresa, Pauk's closest friend, now passed, could not see the dead, even though she was blind with the same thing that made Uroj blind. Both these wolves sensed Naděje's spirit leaving her body, though Pauk could not see nor sense this spirit, she knew the signs of passing all too well. Since Naděje was pushed into leading far before she was old enough, Pauk was the only mentor she ever really had, and as the elder leader breathed her last breath, she remembered all the times she shared with her. Pauk knew that, even after all her many years, she would never get used to the drowning sadness of death.
"It's been a long time, and I still don't think I'm ready to let go." Naděje Sighed and she snuggled close to her mate Ombra. "I have so many friends and obligations, yet I am so old and weak that I can barely stand." She knew that her mate was passing away as she spoke, but she tried to fill her mind with other thoughts to hide her deep sadness. "Where do we even go when we die? Do we walk among a different world? Are we passed onto another life? Do we disappear into endless darkness?" Her efforts were clearly failing, "I just have to hope that soon I will see you again. I will see you and everyone I've loved and lost. And they will join me, and we can all live together forever." She nuzzled deeper into the dying mate's pelt to hide her tears. In a last effort to comfort his mate, Ombra weakly lifted his muzzle and placed it on top of the elder leader, wishing he could speak but knowing that his silent comfort was stronger than any work he could have ever said. He loved her, and he knew that she loved him. Pauk watched the two wolves say their last goodbyes and sighed, this was always the hardest time for her. Lost, Pauk wandered to Uroj and, as she had spoken many times before to the wolves of the past, she uttered to Uroj, "Will it ever stop hurting?" And the wise young blind wolf answered just the same as all the others have, "no." He hesitated, then said something new to the immortal pup that she had not yet heard, "If it does stop hurting, then you are no longer alive. As long as there is death, there is pain, but without death there is no life, and without life there is no love or repair. Remember this, Pauk."
