Biography
A controlling and overly-logical wolf with a large ego, who desires to be leader of the pack, no matter the cost. Yaafsai truly believes that anything is worth sacrificing if it's for the good of the pack.
As a pup, Yaafsai was confidently proclaimed to be leadership material by his mother. He was praised and praised, always living up to his parents high expectations. Pupsitters often noticed him trying to direct his fellow pups on how to "play properly" but laughed it off as a silly game. How wrong they were.
As he got older, his need to control, brag and boast only got more obvious. Yaafsai's favourite phrase "for the good of the pack" was often mocked by his older brother Yiq-Un, but that just made the adolescent more determined to prove what a great leader he would be. With time, he gained a little more wisdom, being less preachy and more persuasive, which caused his packmates to mostly decide it was a weird puppish phase of his.
He later joins the sub-pack, mentoring under Xhous, and becoming a well-established chaser, much to his mother's delight. Saouth becomes convinced he will be the next leader, and never hesitates to remind him of his duty. Around this time he also meets and impresses a like-minded outsider named Sajaath, and forms a somewhat tactical relationship with her "for the good of the pack". Yaafsai dislikes Xhous' mate Ilakra, and considers himself the unofficial second in command after Xhous, delegating tasks and making himself useful. The sub-pack consider him to be a nosy, but well-meaning wolf, and listen patiently to his suggestions, but ultimately they always defer to Xhous or Ilakra.
When Xhoukan is born and especially after he is named heir, Yaafsai's bitterness surfaces in full force and he tries to manipulate the youngster into doing menial tasks under the guise of improving his natural ability, but really Yaafsai is trying to sabotage Xhoukan's technique and leave an opening for him to be named heir instead. His goal is to reunite the main and sub pack under his rule, and prevent division among the wolves, but Xhoukan's natural talent shines through and upon hitting adulthood he becomes lead chaser, and eventually takes over from his father.
This discourages Yaafsai, but not for long. Not realising that Xhoukan is serious about his feelings for Korh, he chooses to bring in an outside wolf, a young and attractive female named Xsin, to use as a pawn for manipulating Xhoukan's leadership decisions. When this backfires spectacularly (Xsin being uninterested in males) and causes major conflict in the sub-pack, Yaafsai slinks back to his mother for comfort and advice. With both Xhoukan and Ilakra angry at him for insulting Korh, he generally spends more time with the main pack, hoping to learn about them and find a new path to leadership.
Year 10 is where it all kicks off, literally. Yai is injured in a freak accident whilst out on patrol, losing an eye to an errant kick from his prey, and returns frail and close to death. Yaafsai takes this opportunity to suck up to Fhua, bringing her little gifts here and there, and offering to make the trip to fetch medicines from his brother's stores. As Yai's health deteriorates, he brings up the possibility of leadership, but Fhua rebukes him, unwilling to believe that her friend is dying.
With this plan set on the back-burner, he instead talks to the understandably stressed Uansah, who has just been named heir, gaining her trust and offering to become her mentor. Yaafsai reasons through his hatred towards the young female, who in his eyes has "stolen" his life goal away from him. At the very least he concludes that he can either get her ousted or killed with his "advice" and take over with little fuss whilst their packmates are distracted.
When Yai seems close to death, Yafsaai stands vigil on Council Point, a small area outside and above the main den, controlling the flow of wolves so as to not "overwhelm their exhausted leader". Some packmates come to see him as devoted to his family (if a little odd) just as he expected. When Uansah is named leader it's a smooth transition into him becoming the secondary leader, a position that would have usually gone to Uansah's mate, Ou-Ban.
With his authority secured, Yaafsai influences Uansah to introduce subtle changes to how things are done, testing the waters for resistance. He convinces her to be wary of lurking threats, and tells her that she must improve her fighting skills against dangerous and deadly enemies for the good of the pack.
