Biography
Death of a Son
Lulalune didn't understand what had happened. Her back had been turned just a moment, long enough to snag a bite to eat to bring back to her weaning pups. Goddess knows they were ready for it.
Two pups were exactly where they were supposed to be, her second born, and the pup Sabre named Kizer. But her first born, a son with a deep red chest, was nowhere around. His siblings didn't know where he'd wandered off to. Lulalune sniffed the area, not worrying at first, but at the first scent of coyotes, she sent up the high alert.
The best tracker in the pack, Tamon, took to the trail immediately. But it was too late.
Tamon found the small pup on the outskirts of the territory in an area rancid with the scent of coyotes. Lulalune's anguished cries broke through the serenity of the evening. It shook every bone in Sabre's body.
He tried approaching, to comfort his pack mate and to see what Lulalune wished to do with his body.
"I just want to take him home," she sobbed. "I don't want to leave him out here for something to devour." Even though he knew it was the way, to leave the dead where they lay, Sabre took the cooling, bloodied body gently in his mouth and together in mourning, they brought the pup home.
Death Strikes Again
Not again Lulalune pleaded with the Goddess. Please, don't let this be happening again.
But she couldn't find her youngest daughter anywhere. At only a month and a half, she'd just started crawling and really moving around. But she'd just been sleeping warm in the sun as Lulalune watched the other pups so that the other mothers could attend the mourning ceremony for Shenandoah's pup. Lulalune knew exactly the pain her pack mate was experiencing. And as she searched everywhere for her own small pup, a beautiful white coated girl with her father's red dilution, her heart was gripped in fear of experiencing it again.
"Dear one," she called, ever more frantic by the second. She noticed a group of pups near the cliffs, much too close for her liking.
"Pups, come away from there!" She hollered, only before realizing that all their tails were cowered under their bellies as they hunkered down.
"Lulu," Crasstin's keenest pup, recently dubbed Beadonix, whimpered before running to the adult.
"Bea," Lulalune said anxiously while trying to comfort the pup, "have you seen my little one?" She couldn't stop the trembling in her voice.
"It was an accident!" Ayjen, one of the older pups, cried as she ran towards Lulalune.
"Ayjen, where is my pup," Lulalune repeated sternly.
"We were all playing," the pup said as tears soaked her coat.
"Ayjen, where is she!" The pup's belly hit the ground.
"She tripped," one of the other small voices said.
"Ayjen took her stick and she tripped!" "She fell!" "Mama, I can't see her!" "She fell over the side." "Ayjen threw the stick near the edge." "And she tripped when she got close." "Mama, what happened to sister?"
Young voices overlapped one another as Lulalune's racing heart tried leaping from her chest.
"No!" She screamed, silencing the pups. "No, no, no, no, no!" She raced to the edge of the cliff, but could see nothing through the dense foliage below.
Lulalune howled with all her might, calling for help again and again until the pack, noses and paws still covered in the soil of Shenandoah's pup's grave.
"She went over the edge!" She cried as Sabre came into view. "They were playing and the youngest were sleeping and one asked for a snack and ---" she tried explaining in one breath.
The pack immediately ran to the edge, but none could see where the pup may have fallen, if she might have still be alive.
"Aiyo, Kaushan, Tamon, Nimbus, you have the best noses. Lead us. If you have pups here, stay with them. I never should have put so much on your shoulders, Lulalune. The rest of you, find my daughter!" Sabre commanded with the authority of the Alpha.
Shenandoah trotted slowly to the rest of the pack. Lulalune immediately gathered her into an embrace as they cried together. Their pups nuzzled into their mothers' fur and shed tears with them.
"We're sorry, Mama," the pups said over and over.
Later, the body of the small she-pup was found by Aiyomi. She let out a sad howl, alerting the others, before picking up the tiny broken body and bringing her home.
As the light of day faded into a clear, moonlit night, the pack gathered all together and mourned for both pups, for the futures they should have had, had Mother Nature been more kind.
In the heavens above, Goddess opened her arms as she welcomed two tiny scared souls into her ever loving embrace.
