Biography
You find Circadian wandering around the camp, laughing and joking with some of the other wolves as they prepare for a hunt. As you approach, you see his oddly blue coat shimmer in the sun like a distorted reflection on a waterfall. He turns to look towards you and immediately flashes a big smile, padding over to meet you halfway.
"A guest, huh? I'm betting Sights sent you over to meet me."
You nod and he seems to puff out his chest proudly.
"Well, I'm also betting that she told that Life story to you. That's the story she tells to everyone. I guess if she wants to give you the full pack experience then I should tell you about Death."
He sits down in the center of the pack clearing and you sit with him. Unlike Sights, he doesn't seem to mind the open atmosphere and welcomes anyone else who wants to listen.
"Death has always been the littler sister, for there can be no Death without Life first. While Life had always been celebrated and encouraged, Death had long grown accustomed to scorn and resentment. Life tried to get the wolves under her care to recognize Death as an equal, a necessary ending to the natural cycle of Life, but it was an uphill battle with no foreseeable end.
"When the wolves of the previous land were being killed off en masse, Death grew exponentially, a hungry fervor consuming her that neither of them could hope to stop. Death lost control of herself, and soon enough she would move on from just taking wolves to overtaking Life herself. Knowing that Life and her wolves would not be able to survive there, soon began their migration to a new land. But Death stuck close to their heels, picking off the young and weak and exhausted one by one.
"What Sights always leaves out of her own story of Life is that when they finally reached this new, prosperous land, there was a fierce battle between the two sisters. The ground shook and mountains shattered as Life and Death were locked into a vicious exchange of claws and teeth. Death was a fierce monster, and Life was weakened by the long trek and dwindling population. Death closed her teeth around Life's neck, pinning her to the ground with a victorious snarl. She would have killed her sister, which would have made all of the wolves, Life and Death included, cease to exist.
"But as Life whined below her and Death was about to deliver the final blow, the scared earthly wolves hidden in the forest rushed out to defend their savior. These wolves, with bleeding paws and starving bellies, nothing left to their names, cried out 'Please don't take Life away from us! Take me instead!'
"Dozens of wolves joined in the cries, echoing the same sentiment. They begged Death to spare Life with everything they had. They offered their souls, their lives, their families and memories, precious family heirlooms and the very fur on their bones, all of it for just a small chance that their children might still yet live, all of it so that Life could continue on even if it was without them.
"Death, startled by this show of bravery and sacrifice, released Life from her jaws to lean down and inspect these fearful wolves closer. 'You would give everything to me, for her?' she bellowed.
"'Yes, we would!' they cried. 'For our children, for Life, we would give the world!'
"And Death, so surprised and touched by the sentiment, backed away. Life rose back up, a protector of her people, and Death bowed to her, conceding that neither of them could exist without the other. Life began her journey to the rainforest, and Death began her own solemn march towards the glaciers. On opposite sides of the world, they made their homes, with Life creating a booming kingdom of wolves and Death harboring the spirits of those passed on in the icy waters she inhabits.
"Now they say that if you leave offerings for Death when a wolf passes on, you might be able to catch a glimpse of their spirits as they head North, to the Realm of the Dead. And if she really takes a liking to you, then she might just give you some gifts in return."
Circadian finishes his story and all the pups that had gathered around to listen gasp in delight. In a rush, several of them throw out questions at once, their voices chaotically overlapping as Circadian tries his best to answer their curious ramblings.
Not wanting to interrupt the wave of pups who seemed determined to bury Circadian in questions, you rise and give him a respectful nod as you leave. He beams another smile at you before you turn to go find the next wolf to introduce yourself to.
