Rosewater wasn't born to the Eclipse Coven, nor was she adopted in a traditional sense. When Eclipse Coven was still no more than 8 wolves strong, Kushodo came back from his first scouting mission and returned to the makeshift den with a young pup. She carried with her some food and the knowledge of a better place to make their home, and she introduced herself as Rosewater: a peace offering and sign of goodwill from the pack that previously inhabited the land. Rosewater was familiar with the land, and helped the pack while they grew accustomed to their home. Rosewater eventually befriended the younger prince, and the two bonded over their fondness of the land. However, their carefree walks were put on hold when Rosewater became old enough to join in on the hunts. Since she still knew the area better than anyone, she was an invaluable asset and ideal fit for tracking prey. Still, she missed being able to freely explore at her own leisure, and jumped at the opportunity to rejoin Shikanori on his routine treks once he too became of age. It wasn't long after that the two became a bonded pair; one of the first (and happiest) in the history of the pack.
...but is that really the whole story? In reality, Rosewater was not a peace offering, but an abandoned pup discarded from a pack that did not have the resources to care for her. The gifts she brought were in reality just the pity provisions given to her before she was left behind during the night. Had Kushodo not run into her when he did, Rosewater would have died within a day. Starstruck by the adults that saved her and afraid of being abandoned again if they were to learn the truth, Rosewater lied about her situation. When the pack responded with such excitement to her story, she resolved to play the role for however long she was allowed to stay. While Shikanori did enjoy their mutual interest in nature, what really endeared the pair to each other was their shared feelings of being cast aside.
