Nephthys was born into calamity.
From the very first time that she opened her eyes, meeting the warm gaze of her parents embrace, she knew that something was wrong. She held an overly-deep bond with those wolves who were about to pass to the other side and the ones who were welcomed into this one. Her parents were very concerned for the unique "ability" that their daughter had and wondered if this was a bad omen for the pack. Many full moons passed and Nephthys grew into an otherwise agile semi-adult, her parents were very proud of her nonetheless, even if her daughter's power was still present.
She soon took the position of "Chief of the Funeral Rites", as she liked to call it, under her paws. In her free time she spent time with the younglins of the pack, under the vary gazes of the worried mothers.
Everything looked great for her. Until he showed up.
She thought he had everything that any female could have asked for; brave, intelligent, handsome... But little did she know...
It all started when they first met. Nephthys' silhuette crossed gracefully the many trees that the forest held at a tranquil trot. She wasn't going to be in a hurry for just a mere sip of water from the creek, she thought to herself. Said creek appeared to be way nearer than she had expected it to be. Nephthys crouched near the edge and took the first drink, it was a rather chilly day and there were countless of fallen leaves running down the current.
A shadow came into sight from the other side of the rapids. Nephthys perked her ears in alert at the stranger's presence while he came into view. He was astounding.
His deep blue eyes matched perfectly with the creek's cold water and as he walked over to the shore, his dark thick coat got completely soaked up. With a rather grumpy groan, he shook it off, spreading thousands of water droplets in the process. A chuckle broke the forest's silence across the current, finally undescovering Nephthys' presence the whole time that he had been there.
A sheepish smile formed across his face as he approached the she-wolf; 'Well I see I have company', he whispered.
'Oh!... sorry I didn't mean to startle you', she trailed.
'It's no problem, don't worry... I'm used to it'. The tone in his response seemed odd, used to what? Is he just being egocentric? She thought, while pondering for an answer to what he just said.
'I haven't seen you around here much, what's your name?' He spoke first.
'I'm Nephthys, and you?' She tried to sound casual, yet friendly.
He grumbled; 'Oh, I'm sure it doesn't matter... I don't like my name anyways'
Why?... Nephthys spat back, not understanding why a name could be so bad... but the glance that he gave her warned her that it was best not to continue the phrase.
'Well, glad to meet you Nephthys. I'm sure we'll meet again soon, as I'm in one of the main hunting parties... and I'm also the new breeding male. Ya' know, I have plenty of responsibilities to take care of'. As soon as he said that he left right where he came, like nothing ever happened. Leaving a confused and flustered Nephtys right on the very same spot.
Why did he take such an interest in her? Like they didn't even know each other before that. Nephtys suddenly had a bad feeling about all of this, but shook it off as just being extremely tired.
I'm sure he is no bad...
Moons passed and these two got closer and closer. It got to a point in which everyone in her pack just assumed that they were a thing. Nephthys thought the same thing, two months before she discovered that she was expecting puppies...! But had no idea how to tell him the news, or what will her pack think of that. So, she didn't tell anyone. Days passed, even months, and still no one discovered that she was pregnant or how she managed to perform her duties in such state. Well... it was a secret, until it was time to give birth.
There weren't any complications, neither the herbalist was involved. It was no surprise that nobody ever noticed, as only one little tiny pup was born. Nephthys loved her with all her heart and would do anything for her at that point. She also had the eyes of her mother, though with a much lighter tone.
Then, somehow, he found out rather than any of her other packmates. He was furious. He said that all of this wasn't supposed to happen, that they couldn't find out about all this. Nephthys was petrified, she had never seen him so angry, while trying to shush the crying pup. He threated with killing the younglin if she didn't leave when the pup was old enough to fetch for herself. So they hid themselves, getting the pack to think that, somehow, Nephthys died. All of this while he continued his life like nothing happened. Not a single emotion for the possible death of his "mate".
It looked like Nephthys had no other option but to leave her pack and family behind, and so she did exactly that. She quickly analyzed her situation; she was pack-less, lost and a complete idiot for trusting him. Like she didn't know his name! I'm an absolute fool. He probably just ditched her because he didn't want to seem taken, for his own selfish reasons I suppose. A branch snapped between her paws finally realizing that she had been shouting her thoughts the whole time.
-Sigh-
Nephthys ran and ran... until she ran upon another pack who kindly took her in. But Nephthys had other plans. In the middle of the night she left voluntarily as she didn't want to be a burden to anyone else.
When she finally joined the Last Hope pack she could just... hope (haha, pun intended) that this was a sign and that she was meant to be there. She continued to do the same chores as in her native pack, though with a more cautious and premeditaded pace. Nephthys had quite the trust-issues but she knew the rest of the pack meant well in the end, and supported her after all she went through. The pups are the only wolves that she truly trusts as she knows they mean no harm in any way.
Now when she watches over the pups like they were hers, she can only wish that they were really hers.
