MoonSong and MidnightMystery have perfectly matched singing voices—you could hear it from far away!
MoonSong grew up in a faraway pack, with a name lost to time and bad memories.
Born in a hard year, MoonSong was the Alpha pair's only pup and should have been the pack's pride and joy but instead they were an outsider for as long as they could remember.
From the start, it was clear that they were different and that they didn't see things the same way as the rest of the pack. They were much smaller than the rest of the pack's pups and though they were not weak, they didn't have the same drive to prove that they were the strongest that most of the other pups did and that they were expected to have, especially as a child of the Alpha. They were kind to weaker pups and often spent their time exploring and asking questions of the elders rather than play fighting, more interested in learning about the world around them.
There were deeper differences too, they found, and when they found the words to describe those differences they tried their best to share them with the rest of the pack but they did not understand. They were met with misunderstanding and confusion, indifference and disbelief.
They kept trying, standing up for themselves and their beliefs whenever they could, trying to show the pack who they were, trying to make them understand. Eventually it became clear that the pack didn't really want to understand, that they weren't willing to reconsider or even try to see things in a different light and the more they brought it up, the more it began to anger the pack and the more the pack tried to make them fall in line. Even so, they didn't give up. They refused to change themselves to fit what the pack thought they should be, to quietly accept the pack's disrespect.
In the fall of their first year, a loner came to the pack- a mother with a pup in tow, just one. She was a dusty, faded black, her ribs poking through her fur. They watched as she begged the Alpha to join the pack, for the sake of her pup, promising to do whatever he wanted as long as her pup could be taken care of.
The Alpha said no. In his eyes, she was weak, just another useless mouth to feed during what would be a hard winter. But he eyed the pup, standing steady behind her mother, looking back at him without fear. No, she couldn't join but they would take the pup, he said. The pack had had only a few this year and they were in desperate need of hunters. They would take the pup but only if she left. Faced with an impossible choice, the she-wolf left, leaving her pup behind.
MoonSong didn't meet the pup until later. She was waiting with a pupsitter in the pack's pup den, laying with her head resting on her paws and a sad look on her face. Even so, they could tell she was a strong pup and they wondered where she had come from, what her life had been like. They could tell she was a survivor. The other pups stuck to the edge of the den, eyeing her suspiciously but MoonSong went right over, laying down next to her and welcoming her to the pack. It was the beginning of great friendship.
MidnightMystery was a strong wolf, stronger than most of the pack's pups and often beating them when they wrestled. She was one of the pack's best apprentices while MoonSong remained at the bottom of the pack but she was kind to them when the others were not and understood them in a way that their own pack was unable or unwilling to. They grew very close, inseparable even. She was beautiful in their eyes, with her blue eyes and blue-black fur, muscles rippling beneath her pelt. Their friendship made pack life tolerable in a way it hadn't been before, for a while anyway.
Things came to a head in their second winter. Too many cold nights spent trapped in the close quarters of the pack's cave, too many hurtful words and actions by pack members who should have cared enough to at least try to understand and respect them. Moonsong couldn't stand to stay any longer. They left in the deep of winter and, to their surprise, MidnightMystery followed.
